Virgin Media Discussion Thread

i'm wondering if virgin are throttling me for having uploaded a lot (about 600gigs) to amazon cloud. Even though i wasn't doing it at full speed. I've never had upload speed problems before but all of a sudden for the last 3 days my upload is at 3mbit compared to the usual 10mbit.

Download speed and ping are still as they should be...

edit: if i just bit the bullet and went for a homeworks+ connection, would they assure a better level of upload?

how much is homeworks+ and can it be added to any plan ?

This lot take the royal ****. Just had my letter saying my 200mb service is going up £3.50 a month. Straw the breaks the camels back for me I'm afraid,

Yup,its like the 3rd price increase this year for me,The £3.50 one i got like a month or two back was it for me,I cancelled both Tivo boxes and kept just the internet.

Virgin are extremely lucky BT doesn't offer infinity in my area yet or id have dropped everything..they're getting too greedy and continue to over subscribe in areas their systems cannot cope.

I think it's because they know most areas can only get fiber with them, so they milk it for as much as they can for as long as they can.

Just upgraded to the Vivid 200 Gamer package, got a superhub 3 which I didn't want (I use modem mode) and lo and behold 3 weeks later, I seem to be having peak time congestion issues.

I was considering moving to FTTC to save some cash, I'd only get 46/9 on that - bollards :(

You have to call customer services to have it added.

You have to have one of the 200mbit packages to upgrade and it's an extra £10-15/month, I forget... but you get 300/20 connection speed with no throttling for excessive downloading... I did 1.5TB in under 2 days and there was no limitation.

Of course you can upgrade to the 200mbit package & homeworks+ at the same time.

It also appears to be on a different bandwidth tier with less congestion.

My neighbours are on the 100mbit package and their connection is atrocious - really horrible to use at peak.

My connection at peak time is almost as good as it is at 4am.

Id be happy with that if the price was cheap,I mean when i download games from steam,Origin etc they max our at around 22-25mbps anyway so really there isn't any need to have super duper fast speeds like we have 200+ because the servers we download from wont let us take full advantage of the speeds were capable of anyway.

Virgin seem to be focusing on adding more speed to make it sound absolutely fantastic..like everything in the whole world will download instantly BUT it doesn't.

Its like having a Bugatti and been on a 30mph road behind traffic, thats how i can explain today's internet connection.

I regularly max out my connection with Steam / Origin / UPlay / etc... in Switzerland I got about 60MB/s on a 500mbit connection - so practically full speed.

And here I've been getting about 35MB/s on my 300 mbit connection as I rebuilt everything and repopulated my games library.

I get good speeds from many other servers too.

You sure you're not getting confused between MB/s and mbps?

Virgin Media Bill Increase

As title says, bill increase. Anyone else getting this?

My monthly broadband has gone up £2.99 so i'm almost paying £30 a month, totally not worth it. I'm now calling to kick off.

What do you have and how much do you pay?

I was on £30 (offer) that got pushed to 42 and now this bump. I need to give them a call as well. I am looking for alternatives... just in case they do not plan to cut down the bill.

There's a big VM thread in the Internet Connectivity forum so I'd imagine this will get moved there. Mine was going up by £3.49/month which was absolutely wonderful because I'd only been with them 4 months

Spoke to them yesterday and got £5 credit a month on my account for 6 months, then the £3.50 removed for the remainder of the contract. Might have been able to do better but I get so bored going round the houses with the retentions people. I only have 50mb/s and the basic TV package anyway so I'd imagine there's not a huge amount of wiggle room.

Just called them up and i've now got a £3 discount added on for 6 months LOL so the price increase from November is pointless.

After 6 months i'll call up and threaten to leave again ;)

That's the basic 'offer', you should have gone through to retentions.

Aw man dont burst my bubble haha.

I'll do retentions in 6 months.

Just done a speed test and i'm on 52.2Mbps download and 3.19Mbps upload.

Is that crap or okay for £25 a month?

That really should be fine for most consumptions.

I just cut a deal with retention , on a new 12 month contract though. All base packages , with 6 months free Netflix and £50 credit on line rental (i opted to pay in bulk advance for 12 month rental) + 1 month bill waived + some credit they owed me (no idea what for) ; first 6 months for £16 and then on 19 for the next 6.

You should be getting over 70mbps .

I'm on the same package as you and get 73-74 mbps.

Is it crap or not well for me getting 73-74mbps costing 32 quid something a month compared to be you would be paying over 40 quid (76 mbps package via vdsl or bt fiber to the cabinet) a month with no deals going on you know because you can get it cheaper if you first sign up or something.

Tbh its okay

You could call virgin media to get over 70mbps, i think its for existing customers not new ones from what i have read.

Who will get an upgrade?

If you’re a broadband customer who joined us before 24th November 2015 on 50Mbps or below, 100Mbps or 152Mbps, we’ll offer you an upgrade to our more powerful speeds of SuperFibre 70Mbps, VIVID 150Mbps and VIVID 200Mbps

hehe , quite the contrary. I had a pretty legitimate discussion with the representative. They did try to sell me more expensive packages (cheaper than what i pay now) with sports channels etc, but I flat out declined as i do not watch them to begin with and wanted to keep my services the same with pretty much a drop in the bill.

The line rental can be availed by any one :

Cheers!

My letter come through this morning, Broadband and phone going up by £3.49.

Looks like I will be changing, having been with Virgin less than 2 years this will would be my 4th increase.
