Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I have been a Virgin customer for over 7 years but it looks like it is finally time to jump ship. My options are fairly limited as we do not need or wish to pay for a land line but our Virgin connection is no longer fit for purpose.

There have been a few issues here and there over the years but in recent months my connection has been getting steadily and consistently worse and worse. I am on 150meg and this last couple of weeks my peak time speeds have been abysmal, at some points barely faster than dial-up. As soon as it hits off-peak I shoot straight back up to full speed.

After being fobbed off on numerous calls to clueless first line support I finally got through to someone who confirmed that I am in an area with a 'high peak time traffic fault'. I was told that as a result customers are having their speeds capped at peak times and I was given a 'review date' of November 11th!

I am currently getting anywhere between 1% and 5% of the speed I am supposed to be paying for at peak times yet Virgin does not consider this to be a problem with my line and the service status throughout this has shown as 'no known issues'....

Basically I have to put up with rubbish speeds at barely a fraction of what I am supposedly paying for with no guarantee of a fix any time soon. A quick look over at the Virgin forums and there are dozens of people having exactly the same problem. It looks to me like they have oversold and stretched the network to breaking point in some places :(

Mines been playing up for a while, in the 2 years we've lived in this house I've had about 3 months of decent speeds, I was told that the cab local to me has been hit by lightning and is damaged, yet when I talk to a different person I'm being told there are no issues in my area, if they are over subscribed then they're going to be in for an ear bending...

I've been looking at the Vivid 200 Gamer package, but I want to know what Virgin are smoking to make it an extra £50 a month on top of my current package to add that

If it was say £5 a month i would go for it, but £50....

I'm not getting what I pay for so they can go screw if they think I'm paying anything extra for anything, they are on the verge of being kicked out...

Mine is starting to annoy me... it's really slowing down in the evenings.

This graph is with practically nothing active on the network... certain nothing that would increase latency by more than 1-2ms for a split moment.

my basic 50 meg package had been suffering with slow upload (3mbit instead of 10) for a while so i just decided to go for it and phone up to be put on the 200meg gamer package. It's only £15 a month more which isn't the end of the world as i do quite a lot of uploading and indeed downloading. I'm delighted to say that my upload is a constant 20/21 meg.

glad i went for it.

If you switch from a Hub 3 to a Superhub2 AC

1. the port flapping goes away
2. Your graph will look a lot better!
Yes, I knew this and tried to get a SH2AC a couple months ago but when the engineer installed it he couldn't get it to work on the network, even after several phone calls to his boss. We then found out that if you're on 300Mb or 200Mb Gamer then you have to use the SH3. On lower packages the SH2AC is fine.

Mine was fine when I first went to Vivid, weirdly when they have a new product the old ones suffer, it's almost like they are trying to force users to update...

OK... I'm cancelling and moving to Sky... I was thinking about Zen but the price difference doesn't appear to be worth the extra and I should be able to get sub 10ms pings with Sky.

It's going to be painful losing the "advertised" download speed... but I've gone from loving a fast and reliable ~13-15ms 300mbit service to hating a 20-50+ms highly variable serice that just got a speedtest of 5mbit in a matter of days. I knew this area was over-subscribed - but I was hoping the 300mbit homeworks+ service would help with that.

I have no idea what they are playing at... it appears there is some form of new customer welcome speed boost that is then removed after not very long.

:(

Sky and Zen are the same price when you take discount out of the equation.

Never had an issue with Zen but would consider going back to Sky to be fair.

Zen are very good and you will forgot any extra the moment you have an issue .......

Good point, looks like I missed that even on their "Pro"/"Max" package Sky don't offer a static IP and that's a bit of a deal breaker for me.

But on the flip side... I've read of people with problems getting Zen to enable fastpath.

OK...what kind of pings are you getting to bbc.co.uk and multiplay.co.uk?

Thanks

Looks like I'm going Zen...

EDIT: Although just called them and they want nearly £200 for setup/activation
