Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Virgin have just sent me a letter telling me my bill is going up 7.5%... Another inflation busting increasing, last year it was 9%... :/

Just gave Virgin my 30 days notice and signed up with BT for a effective cost of £16.32 for 12 months Broadband and phone line. The first person I spoke to (to find out the process) did not care at all. The second person gave the standard try and stay with us spiel but the offers were very poor (slightly cheaper for 6 months and even more expensive after that).

Well, letter arrived today, £2.99 increase as of 1st November.
That will put my monthly bb & telephone to £41 pm

Contract ends early November so will be on the phone to see what I can get out of them.
Not expecting much, but having had a quick look round tonight there's not much in the way of alternatives to virgin if you want 100mb+

That's the problem. Mine is going by the same which takes my 300mb BB to £50 a month. Guess its not too bad.

I asked myself, do I need 100Mb+? and I have to say the answer is clearly no. Unless people leave they will keep on doing inflation busting increases while tempting new customers with better offers then existing.

According to the BBC, bills are averaging less then inflation increases so Virgin are clearly doing something wrong if they need to put up bills. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-41017972

Got my letter, they want to increase mine from £45 to £48.50, thats for standard Tivo/150MB/Evening & Weekend calls. Not sure whats best to push for really, I'm only on basic TV. I wouldn't mind the new box but not sure if I will get one for free?

Ours will be £70pm once this increase comes in that's for weekend calls(don't even have a handset in the house)/M+ TV with Tivo and an extra V+ box/70mb? broadband I think that's what their latest "free speed upgrade" put it up to.

My house mate would marry the Tivo if he could so I don't think there's anyway to talk him away from Virgin but that's a ridiculous amount of cash.

Okay, so we just got the super hub 3 had the 2AC for ages and it wasnt much kop but man this Super hub 3 is dropping out wireless a hell of a lot, any solutions to this or is it faulty? i'd say it drops 5-10 times a day and then comes back on within a minute.

Got my letter too, £2.99 increase. I'm already paying £47 a month for 200 gamer and a phone line bundle deal. The phone line bundle actually made the broadband cheaper than if I got just the broadband alone, so I got the deal and just don't use the phone line.

having a look on the site now, looks like 300Mb is £48 a month to new customers on a 12 month contract, and 200Mb non gamer is £43 a month.

I'm going to phone up tomorrow and see what they can wriggle, as I don't think it's fair to be paying so much when standalone packages are either faster and cheaper, or better value, if a tiny bit slower (upload).

I won't be going to 300 as that means I'd have to get a SH3, which there's no way I'm going to accept.

By all means ask for a better deal, but be aware that 200 Gamer is now legacy (i.e. no longer offered). If you change your bundle to get a better deal then 200 Gamer very likely won't be available to you. :( I upgraded from 200 Gamer to the VIVID350 tier and can't fault it... aside from the stupid SH3. Modem mode + pfSense box + Unifi AP = win. :)

That doesn't sound too promising :(

This household does make use of 200Mb to be fair, but the price compared to new customers is higher than what I'd deem acceptable!

Call 150 and choose the option for 'Thinking of leaving us'. This team used to be 'retentions' and would have a lot of clout, but not any more. Haggle hard, but inevitably fail to come to a compromise (no matter how good the deal is) and say you're sorry but you will go with Sky. You'll be given a disconection date for 30 days time. Just say thanks and end the call. In a couple of days or so a different team will call you directly and tell you how they value your custom blah blah, and they'll have more bargaining power. Worst comes to worst you can always call them yourself within 30 days and cancel the disconnection.

Source: I won this game.

VIVID 350
TiVO V6 box
Second V+ HD box upstairs
Full House TV package
M phone
Homeworks add-on

All for forty quid a month. It was 38, but I agreed to add the extra couple of quid to upgrade from 200 Gamer to VIVID350.

That's exactly what I did, cancelled and was going to go with someone else.

They called up a few days later and offered me 100MB broadband, weekend and evening calls for £24.

I have a freeview box i'm going to use so not worried about having the TV from them, the box is dire anyway.

The new V6 TiVO box is a fantastic bit of kit tbf, and runs incredibly quickly. Things open/load before you've even finished pressing the key. They're a mega improvement over the older boxes. I don't watch much actual TV, but I do love the V6.

All that for £40 a month?

I feel like I'm being ripped lol for £49.50 a month just for broadband and an unused phone line.

I'll give them a call and use what you've said Rainmaker

Edit*
Phoned up and it turns out my contract actually expires in December anyway. I got 200Mb for £43 a month, which is the same price they advertise to new customers on the website, and it's a rolling monthly contract rather than another 12 months.

I did note that I was thinking of moving to Sky, but to be fair I can see their point as the lady said my household is using on average, 600GB a month, so the 200Mb package makes most sense with the number of devices we have using the line at any given time. Sky's fastest package is
"Up to 76Mb"which would really be too slow, and is priced at £38 a month for an 18 month contract.

I could get a better deal if I opted for a 300Mb bundle package but apparently it's not out in my area yet.

So I guess £43 a month is what I'll continue to be paying. They said I can phone back in the new year to see if a new price can be negotiated, but I think they know full well that moving to Sky, even if it's cheaper, will not really benefit us at all given the sub 100Mb speeds.

Oh well, still saved £7 a month I guess.

Virgin are moving into my area in the next month or so. I'm tempted to go for any deal offered but I'm concerned about the latency issues. Do these affect Skype/ FaceTime calls? And will hooking up my own router remove the latency problem?

Oh yeah I've seen it my Dad has one it is good. But we really don't watch TV so I didn't want to pay for it.

They had to update it as the Sky Q box was killing them. They did a good job.

I having issues it seems with crap DL I have a SH2AC i'm on vivid 200 but I'm getting

Ok Last night it was 20meg 15ms ping.

I'll try it again later. Maybe I was throttled if the mrs had been downloading films from sky

I'm looking at moving from BT 80/20 to Vivid 300. Am I in for a world of trouble with this SH3 issue? Ping is important to me if anyone can advise on this?

Also, if the Superhub 3 is junk, what do people recommend for a different modem/router?
