Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I suspect virmin more than supernews but i have to ask them just in case. I have also tried grabbit and another motherboard and cpu still the same so i think its virmin myself rather than hardware or Sabz

If you're happy to blame 'virmin' then so be it, but I assume your wife's computer also connects to them... at full speed. Grabbit is also poorly written and hopeless at high speed. You still haven't listed your disk setup or config, but as I said they're likely culprits. Look at what works on your wife's PC, and then check against your own. She's using Supernews and VM and getting full speed, so blaming either of them is pointless. Try with proper software, properly configured, and use fast disks. Also ensure your connection (ethernet I hope?) is functioning as expected.

e: The SAB devs are the first to admit its speed limitations on high throughput networks. It's an inherent issue with the single-threaded python base. Nzbget will typically double the speeds at the user end compared to using SAB on the same machine and network. If nzbget doesn't fix it, it's either set up wrong or something else is the issue - i.e. disks, AV, congestion.

SAB been fine for me for years on VM, its only fairly recently the speeds have taken a nose dive.

However will have a look at nzbget.

Has VM's speeds/tiers increased in the elapsing period since sab has been fine for years?... It's a simple fact, SAB is single threaded and limited to its throughput ability - the devs admit this openly. Even if SAB isn't the limit in this case, it's still worth switching to lower overhead, multithreaded software given the chance - especially when it looks and acts like SAB, is free, and will stand you in good stead for years to come. You won't regret switching. As I said you've already elminated Supernews or VM as the culprit even as you posted blaming them. Your own machine is obviously to blame else your wife's PC wouldn't be getting full speed. I'm repeating myself now, but all the answers you need are in the thread. Good luck sorting it out. :)

same here np problems and then all of a sudden speed has been bad for at least a month

As I said, eliminate local factors first. Once you know your local setup is (still) OK and your network isn't broken/faulty, then you can start looking at external factors such as VM or your NSP. Have you tried a different (proper) client like nzbget or Newsbin Pro? Have you tried in a Linux live USB to eliminate Windows issues, or at least disabled your AV, rebooted and tried again? Have you confirmed you're still connected at 1Gbps over ethernet? It's usually something simple. Make sure you're connected over SSL to a port other than 563 - preferably a non-standard port.

e: Sorry I think I mixed the two of you up there, as you're both posting with the same issue at the same time, and I'm replying in between doing something else. The same answers apply to you both however. You'll soon crack it, don't worry. I've been using Usenet for about 20 years, there's not much to go wrong as long as your local setup is correct.

Yeah NZBGet exactly same speed(software looks good so will give that a shot also). So either Supernews or VM capping it.

Will try a trial of Newsgroup ninja now. :)

Local setup is fine, been maxing out supernews/vm connection for literally years.

I do not think its our hardware or software we are using as other people have reported the same issue to virgin media on there forum

Local things can break, updates wreck things, network cables wear, ports become unreliable, disks wear out... It's always worth checking everything. ;) Ninja use ports 23, 80 or 81 for SSL so that can help evade shaping/throttling. In one of your cases another PC in the house works fine, so obviously the NSP (Supernews) and VM can't be to blame, nor can congestion. In the other case who knows?

You said your wife's PC gets full speed though. So again, how is that Virgin's fault or Supernews' fault? Supernews as you know are a Giganews storefront, so if GN have issues Super likely will too. However if your wife doesn't then it really does point to your PC. I don't understand how you keep blaming VM when your wife has a PC on the same LAN as you that's capable of full speed. Try Ninja or even VM's own servers (news.virginmedia.com with no SSL, port 119 and about 30 days retention for binaries).

I will give news.virginmedia.com a try later when i am back from work but thanks for replys rainmaker.

quick question guys. Im currently on VM 200 Gamer option. I see people saying they are on VIVID350 - is this a homeworks option only ?

300 MBit is available in my area but can't see an option for VIVID 350.

@Naan_H just helped a friend upgrade last week to 'Vivid 300' - he was automatically put on the Vivid 350 package. Despite the live chat agent insisting it didn't exist, I just let her put the order through. Next day checked his VM account and it shows Vivid 350!

If it's any use the deal I got him was basic TV, Talk Evenings & Weekends and Vivid 300 (350) for £47pm and some pennies and £20 'activation'... initially was £50 odd but she discounted this when I said the fee wasn't justified for an existing customer.

The TV he won't even use, she literally said you had to take it to get the discounted rate. Without TV it was £55pm odd you couldn't make it up! Downgrading to Talk Weekend only puts it up too! Ridiculous pricing matrixs with VM.

It's area (i.e. network kit) dependent afaik, but yes I do also have Homework as it was thrown in free.
