Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I get 15ms typically at the moment so want something close to that. Is this unlikely on Vivid 300?

I am right next to the cabinet and all new cable. I'm happy to buy a different modem to replace the SH3 too.

The new V6 TiVO box is a fantastic bit of kit tbf, and runs incredibly quickly. Things open/load before you've even finished pressing the key. They're a mega improvement over the older boxes. I don't watch much actual TV, but I do love the V6.

What will you pay for all that after the deal ends? I'm paying £52 just for TV M, phone weekends and 150m bb

I don't have the option of going elsewhere as I would only get 2mb according to the online checker. I wish fiber would hurry up and be installed. Need more competition

I just call up and renegotiate, I've been doing it for years.

So I've been told Vivid 200 isn't managed, is that right?

Anyway around the SH3 issues e.g. using a separate access point?

Sorry I didn't see this when I posted. VIVID200, like most other tiers, is managed on the upstream but not downstream. This only applies during peak hours. VIVID200 Gamer was unmanaged, but is no longer available, having been superseded by VIVID350 (350/20). At present only VIVID350 isn't explicitly listed as managed, but that may or may not change when they get around to updating their documentation. You can see the traffic management policy (which tbf is hardly very restrictive) on VM's site.

As someone said above, the issue with the pings/jitter stems from the Intel Puma6 chipset, which is shared between many comparable branded modems. You can't use your own modem on VM's network, and it doesn't matter whether the hub is in modem or router mode - the issue is present at chipset level so it's still a factor. Unless you heavily game or similar you'd never really be affected though. Caning Usenet at 45MB/sec while watching Netflix/Plex/uploading backups is very nice.

Can you confirm that the router latency issues don't affect video calling?

I've only used it a few times (the kids use FaceTime over wifi to keep in touch with their nan), and it worked fine. No lags or delays etc. I couldn't dare speak authoritatively to actual technical quality, however, so I shan't pretend otherwise.

Does anyone know if Virgin throttle Usenet speeds during peak times? I'm only get 5mb/s this afternoon when it should be closer to 20mb/s at full speed. I ran a thinkbroadband speed test and got full speeds with both single and multithread. Ping test was good too.

Speed tests are prioritised by VM to make the network look better than it sometimes is. They do publish that Usenet and P2P gets throttled at peak times, but I've never experienced it personally even in congested areas. Make sure you use SSL to connect, that you have a decent high speed provider and your hardware/software is capable of keeping up.

Who is your Usenet provider? What machine are you using and with what software? What's your config for it? Also try without antivirus. NZBGet and 15 connections to a HW backbone should see you easily saturate a VM connection.

Provider is Supernews and i'm using Sabnzbd with SSL and 20 connections. I do get full speeds more often than not but it would be nice to get full speeds every single time.

Congestion in your area then, perhaps, rather than throttling. Try switching to nzbget as it's much faster than SAB. About twice as fast in fact. SAB is written in Python and is only single threaded, whereas nzbget is written in C++ and is multithreaded.

Hi, what is the go to router option? My wireless upstairs is poor with the sh2 and I wanted to try a different one. Is set up and switching to modem mode easy?

My newsgroup performance is pants at the moment, peak times or not. This is Supernews and I think there are others with issues on Supernews.

Same here even tried Nzbget still same crap speed but what i cant get my head around is my wifes pc is not affected using the same connection she gets full speed all the time.

Have it running on a small server, speed test maxes out, sabnzbd runs at about 2mb.......not even peak times.

We're getting OT, as this is obviously the VM thread. However in brief I'll refer you back to my earlier post. Check for hardware bottlenecks (especially disks) and ensure you're downloading to an SSD and unpacking to a second drive. Try with antivirus disabled, as NNTP traffic through a local server + encryption messes most AVs up. Make sure your config is correct; nzbget has a lot of useful tweaks, but should still be good up to NSP max out of the box. Try a different NSP if all else fails. Newsgroup.Ninja are excellent. They're a Highwinds reseller, $5 a month if you find their offer or sign up for an account but don't pay and they'll email you with the cheaper price a few days later.

Edit: @chroniclard as I said above try nzbget first. SAB is often too slow and limits faster connections. I'm getting 45MB/sec solid on VIVID350 using nzbget and Newsgroup.Ninja.
