Virgin Media Discussion Thread

i'm with fluff on this, sounds like a server side issue, or VM shaping that particular site/stream/protocol.

if you want, u can send me the link and i'll see if it behaves the same on my vm connection

not good

supposed to be 50mb

Does anyone know why sometimes my Astraweb can go down to as low as 17mbits, yet Speedtests still show 50mbits?

Could it be Astraweb? Are there any other Usenet suppliers I could try?

(I am on port 443)

Have you tried the other SSL server? ssl-eu.astraweb.com, ssl-us.astraweb.com or ssl.astraweb.com depending on what you are using at the moment. Also try port 563.

I presume this is in the evening?
I have access to Giganews, Newshosting and Easynews and they all go down to 16 or less during the evening.

anybody seen the internal speedtest web site the virgin guys use to test the speed of your connection?

Supernews, which is a Giganews reseller, never slows down for me. It's one of the reasons I switched from Astraweb, as it was terribly inconsistent.

Interesting, why is it passworded?

File size transferred : 100.0 MB (104857600 bytes)
Total time taken : 17.04 seconds (17038 milliseconds)
Throughput : 6154.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 6.15 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 49232.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 49.23 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

File size transferred : 10.0 MB (10485760 bytes)
Total time taken : 17.12 seconds (17120 milliseconds)
Throughput : 612.0 KB/sec [Kilobyte-per-second]
= 0.61 MB/sec [Megabyte-per-second]
= 4896.0 Kbps [Kilobit-per-second]
= 4.9 Mbps [Megabit-per-second]

Just to be clear, the username and password is all lowercase, couldn't get it to work as you put it.

Really? I've heard that but never had any problems with Astraweb, it always maxes my connection out and it is cheaper than Giganews. Often it is the port or server that is throttled so it pays to play around with it. The fact that it is happening in the evening only implies that the ISP is causing the issue.

Aye, we were being throttled until we changed to SSL and port 563 IIRC. Before that it was being throttled to a measly 2.5mb/s from the constant 6.7mb/s we get now.

slightly different subject, but did anyone get the free wireless dongle offered with their 50mb connection ? I have made about 6 calls so far to get mine sent out , still nothing. Infact one bloke I spoke to said we don't do that anymore, I said you did when I signed up and it still says you do on your website, he made me guide him to the place it says it before he would agree to send me one. That was like 2 months ago and more calls and promises later still nothing?

i got a usb dongle (D-Link) with the D-Link router about 12 months ago.

Yeah, i got that too, the dongle was retail packed, the router was white box packed, indicating they'd screwed with it, and it has the crappy vm firmware on it instead of the fully working retail firmware

I never plugged it in, i think the phrase to the techies that came out was something along the lines of "if you think your putting that piece of crap anywhere near my network, then i withdraw my offer of tea/coffee and you can leave right now" :D

EDIT,
I too have not noticed any major slow downs with AstraWeb, but as Speed says, evenings are the crippling time period, but if i switch to the SSL connection on Astraweb instead of VM server, speeds go up hugely

Just had mine installed. Going though my old route still, D-Link DGL4300, over 7 years old and it still better than modern routers.

yeah i have an older Linksys, but it was all set up, range expander, hi-gain antenna etc etc, plus it's running DD-WRT firmware, and i have a whole host of accessories like adaptors and even a matching ADSL2 modem, so i can sell the whole lot as a package when i do come to sell
