Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I'm with BT on their gigabit FTTP service for £50 a month. I've had 100% uptime since I had my line installed last September/October (originally 300/50mb.)

I was on Virgin previously. My ping to London game servers has dropped to 10 or below down from 30-40 and I had pretty much constant packet loss.

It'll be a long time before I consider Virgin again.
Using a virgin hub3.0 by any chance? Packet loss is an inherent problem with the puma chip in it.

Does anyone here have VM in an older property? I'm curious to know if they are purely rolling out new subscriptions in new builds, blocks of flats etc (where it may be easiest), and what the likely hood is of having them install it in our street down the line.

I imagine it would be more hassle for them as they would have to tear up the pavements to lay the cable. I've 'registered my interest' on their website, and any others that I can think of to show interest in my area.
they have a dept who deal with that. It's a cost-benefit analysis. If the road is public not private and there are enough potential customers they will aim to install. If it's not cost effective based on their stats they won't / will put it at the bottom of the priority list.

Yeah, the Puma 6 issue. Using it in Modem mode made no real difference, and their Hub 4 uses the Puma 7 chipset, which has similar issues. So my only choice was to move.

BT has been perfect so far though. I was paying £46 for 300Mb from BT and upgraded to 1Gb for an extra £4 a month. I really can't complain.

My ping has been fine since coronavirus but it often takes me several tries to load a webpage and I can't stream on twitch without it going super blocky.

I am assuming this is an issue with virgin being overloaded right now?

If so, has anyone had lucky ringing up and asking for some money off?

How good are Virgin with retention offers? Was looking at a broadband only 100mb deal for £24 1 year contract. After that it goes upto £40 and I'm not looking to pay more than the original deal.

yeah I was lucky. Managed to get onto a hub2.5 and boy am I not changing! Caps me to 200mb/s but worth it IMO. the hub3 was truly awful. My alternatives from other ISP? 2mb/s ADSL. Not much of an option is it?

Well when I try they just tell me if I don't like it leave. I think they're able to tell there is no viable alternative in this area. :(

The Gig 1 service keeps popping up as "In my area" when on the Virgin Media website with my post code in.

But I can't actually attempt to buy it (Tells me my max is 500 Mbps, not that you can order it unless you want to order the ultimate ooomph bundle)

Is it just buggy?

Maybe it's because Virgin aren't doing installs at moment? I'm sure the 1Gb services need an install as they use a different configuration and hub.

Are they doing 1Gb over copper coaxial?

I thought they just need a new super hub.
And I don't have FTTP.

So that's why I'm confused.

It's only happened the last week as well so it's not like Virgin has been to do any work on the area

Seems legit enough?

What is this regarding? Did you cancel and they called your bluff?
I upgraded from the M200 package to the Gigabit package and got the new SH4 delivered.

It may be because I’ve had the SH3 for less than a year and it’s on their system but speaking to VM, they don’t do home collections.

That's why I'm wondering if they are doing gigabit over copper.

All of VM is over copper, there are just some new areas where the fibre cable goes as far as the outside wall of someone's house rather than to a headend. Rolling out gigabit doesn't require fibre, it just requires the network topology to be sensible and interference to be low which is easier to achieve with the RFoG deployments.

I see, thanks.

I’m not too sure what to do, I have spoken to VM about this and was told that with the current situation, engineers aren’t visiting people’s houses.

Suppose I could reply and ask him for his VM ID number and see if it matches when I call customer service again.

It's your house, if you're not comfortable with them coming over then reply that they can send you stamped packaging to return the item to their distribution centre.

VM are currently installing their cables in my street and i was seriously considering joining them....until i started looking through this thread! :D
