I believe there are specific wired and wireless versions of VD

Wired for PCVR https://store.steampowered.com/app/382110/Virtual_Desktop/

SO they say you can't play VR games with the Steam version?

If you want to play wirelessly, you'll need to buy a dedicated router to plug inline between your hub and the PC or get a wifi card and create a local hotspot.

I want to play vr games and use my desktop via a cable as I prefer the best quality, no interest in playing wireless

Then your only option is to use the default oculus software which has the debug and tray tool to adjust settings or steam software wired.

Virtual Desktop just seems to be getting all the love. Now wired with USB-C cable (not ethernet)

I think it depends on your GPU brand.

Nvidia is better on Airlink, AMD on Virtual Desktop.

Also depends on the game. Fallout 4 VR runs better on Virtual Desktop for me. While Skyrim works better on Airlink. No idea why!
