That's not the case. Nvidia is better on both. It's just that for AMD cards it's normally better to use Virtual desktop as you can pick the encoder to use(AMD is much better at HEVC than H.264)
However, For some of AMD's RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 cards things have improved for Airlink as they now use HEVC as the default and you can select 200 Mbps. However if you have an older AMD card or one that they haven't built a profile for yet, you will still be using H.264 when using Airlink.
It's an ASUS TUF Gaming AX5400 about 1 metre away and dedicated for the PC and VR unit.
Been looking into it a bit more. The Airlink PC menu comes up fine, although I'm not a big fan of it, but I can't see any of my PCVR titles there. I've just realised that I may have to check "unknown sources" the in filter menu. I was going to my desktop and then launching the game from the desktop Steam app and not the Steam VR app (at least I don't think I was).
I'll need to play around with it more, but it seems like an awful lot of steps compared to Virtual Desktop.

Haven't used VD for ages. Is it better or worse than a wired connection nowadays (quest2)?
It'll never be as clear or have as little latency as a wired connection with the bitrate upped to 500. The same is true of Airlink. However it's plenty good enough for many games.

Yeah, the mobile version definitely has it. I don't suppose many are buying the wired steam version these days.
Update - definitely has the headlock function with the option to select a delay or not, which is absolutely perfect for my current needs.

SO been looking at VD for a while as an alternate to airlink BUT am I right that you can't just use it wired from pc to headset, you have to connect to your router via ethernet?? My router is all the way downstairs. Anyway around it or shall I try and refund VD

Sadly, one is a meta app and the wired version is steam. The wired version works brilliantly with reshade/opentrack and pancake games for stereoscopic 3D/VR
