More general info on the Recovery Console can be found in the KB:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/
1) Go to command prompt and navigate to your DVD Drive that has the Vista DVD on it, and then to the Boot folder on the DVD.

2) Type in bootsect /nt52 C: <- where C is your XP partition.

3) Reboot, reformat the Vista partition

How do I access the recovery console with the Vista dvd in the drive to do the above. Thanks

As far as I can find, that method doesn't require the recovery console. Just use the command prompt (cmd) in XP.

Damn, 800? Tried a restart? What did vista rate your pc as? Here's mine...

Hope its ok to post this fairly small image :) Lemme know if its not.

It rated it as 3. Spec is in sig
I think it might be that my geforce 6600 only has 128mb and it's started using the ram. I have a Geforce FX5200 256MB lying around, do you think this would perform faster than my geforce 6600 in windows?
Does Windows vista use graphics memory in windows?

How do I navigate my command prompt <----I haven't done this before can you tell?
:p

Don't worry. Start | Run. Type cmd (alternatively, locate Command Prompt in the Start Menu and click it).

Type "D:" without quotes and hit enter (where D: is the name of the drive your Vista DVD is in)

Type "cd boot" without quotes and hit enter.

It should say D:\boot now.

Type "bootsect /nt52 C:" without quotes, as per the instructions.

Reboot, and you should get the XP bootloader menu, or it should boot straight into XP if you only had XP in it.

Thank you guys (Kerplunk & csmager)for your patience with me, you are good teachers :)
I am back to where I started almost, I just have to format the partition I installed Vista on.
I may now give it another go from within XP, starting from scratch as it were :)
Muchos gracios amigos

Like it very much so far, although i had a bit of trouble installing it at first, I think it was due to my wireless card.

I have it installed on my laptop and it has rated it 2 lol. Specs are 2500+ barton / 512mb ram / radeon 9600/9700 64mb/ 60 gig hard disk/ dvdrw

Does anyone know how you map drives? so I can access my networked drives.

Same as XP. If in 'Computer', hit Alt and the Classic Menus will appear. Tools | Map Network Drive, as usual.

And, of course, net use X: \\computer\share in command prompt.

Update, tried to install again with no joy, I noticed on the loader page that the previous Vista attempts where still there on the selection list??
I can sort it so as to boot straight into XP Pro but I am miffed as to why I cannot get Vista to install. Is it worth trying another download and burn just in case there is a problem with the Dvd.

What's the problem with it? What happens (or maybe what doesn't happen)?

Try installing it with Daemon Tools if you have tried several downloads and DVD's.

It reboots 1 during part 2 of the install and continues with installation. When it gets to completing installation it reboots, there is a lot of activity on my usb hard drive(where it is being installed) I get the black loading screen with the white broken bars going across, it does 2 laps and reboots to the boot screen where I have the choice of operating system to load. When it boots back into XP it says Vista failed to install?

Could be a problem with the USB hard disk? I know there are issues with some SATA drives.
