Vista Prices on UK Pre-order here

a lot of students can get either cheap versions from there uni or 'lease' one (for free sometimes) for the duration of their course. For those that can't it is a modest investment over 3 years of a degree....

How many 16 year olds can afford £200 for their A level/academy course? There isn't even discounts avalible on office products and you certainly can't get a job while doing 7 hours school a day.

There will be discounts I am sure of it. There was with XP when it first came out.

This old one again...

I've long since given up - there are just people here who insist on doing the anti Microsoft bit, ignoring the real world and just going on a trendy M$ is the debil rant. The actual facts are, the vast majority of people will use Home Premium for home/enthusiast/gaming use. The full packaged product (according to that price list) is £185. XP Pro full package product on Amazon is still £237.

The upgrade version of XP Pro on Amazon is £154 so using the same sort of discount at a guess Vista Home Premium upgrade will be ~ £120. OEMs are likely to be the same price (ish) as now with maybe Vista being a little more for a while (say £90). I've not quoted OCUK prices as they don't seem to sell the full or retail packages.

If you already have an OS you'll buy an upgrade, if you haven't (i.e. it's new machine) you'll buy OEM.

Doesn't sound outrageous to me for something that will be the foundation of your PC for 3 - 5 years. Of course looking at it rationaly doesn't make for such a dramatc rant for the anti MS brigade... :p

You have a fairly decent spec PC which I'll guess was way more than £100 and yet you bought it, and you've already been told there are student versions of Office/Access for hugely discounted prices. You're not really making sense...

I realise you're only 16 and not at work, but you should understand that people like MS, the distributors and Spie here at OCUK (who supports these free forums you enjoy) livings depend on selling hardware and software.

I'm afraid you live in a priviledged world where things are provided for you still and the realities of commerce don't apply. Whilst some of the headline Full Packaged Product prices for some software look expensive as dramatic headlines, the versions most people pay for are substantialy cheaper. For example the student version of Office is £73 (which included License allows for use on up to 3 home PC's) on a well known book oriented etailer - hardly they daylight robbery you seem to be shouting about. I'd say that was a very reasonable discount from MS acknowledgeing the need / finances of students compared to the full package price.

If you think a copy of windows and office is expensive from "scum monopolies" you're going to hate it when you have to work for a living and pay for Gas/electricity/mortgage/car etc :D

I didn't buy my pc it was a present, I don't see how I'm not making sense, the prices are too high, fact so I have to obtain the software by other means, it's either retail or nothing, otherwise when the motherboard is upgraded it wont work. There is no discount for access whatsoever.

Saying "fact" in an internet forum doesn't make it so, FACT :D

The prices are "too high" in your opinion because you are still quite young and are obviously used to having things like a decent PC bought for you. You're going to hate having to work for a living and pay bills ;)

Ooooh ninja edit....

If by "other means" you piracy you're not going to endear yourself to the Mods here - Spie and OCUK make thier living selling this stuff.

I'm not sure where the motherboard comes into it - if you're talking about an OS you already have one so stick with it or buy an upgrade. If you're talking about Office you've already been shown how to get it at discounted prices. As for access it's available as an upgrade for £70 - if need be you could buy MS works for ~£25 to be eligable for the upgrade and have it for ~£100 total.

You can probably do it cheaper - I just can't be bothered to do the leg work for you as you clearly can't be.

Access is £209 with office how many times do I have to say it? If you upgrade the motherboard you must buy another copy of the operating system to remain legal, which is why you end up having to buy retail.

So Apple do a discount version and MS don't, well apart form the student version that's < 1/4 of the full retail price.. /sigh

You're clearly not listening to anything people are telling you, believe you should get something for almost nothing. I'll give up at this point I think...

hmmmm, 12500 VLK versions of MS Vista business will cost how much?

£250 x 12500 = £312,000 of software for the place I work for.

I don't think we will be planning to use Vista yet.

Unless like most enterprises you have software assurance as part of your volume license in which case you can upgrade to Vista for free.... :)

Not much good if the students can't afford the student price is it? I really would like to legally own the full version but I can't afford it and need it for my education.
