Vodka

I've never rated Grey Goose, especially considering the price of it. I think most people are blinded by the price and assume it must be good. Plus it appears to be a premium spirit that's currently "in" to like :)

Have to disagree, I did a blind taste test of four vodkas (Russian Standard, 42 Below, Belvadere & Grey Goose) with five mates.

Everyone made their choices from best to worst - everyone picked Grey Goose as the best, the rest of the results were mixed but Grey Goose was clearly the best. It's popular & expensive for a reason!

Grey Goose is all about the scene tax ;)

Zubruwka on the rocks or with apple juice = :D:D:D

Just because it is expensive, doesn't make it good. High percentage stuff is awful, Once drank some 79.9% stuff, Polish pure sprirt. Geez that stuff was harsh. Were mixing it with bacardi at the time . . . .

I personally hate absolut, its awful stuff! I like Wyborowa myself!
Smirnoff is good enough for mixing, but thats all. Would not drink it straight!

Polish - Spirytus Rektyfikowany

The stuff we had was 86% if I remember correctly, and even as a student on the final day of exams after all day drinking, found it horrible when taking a shot of the stuff. Stupid thing to do but boy did it make me feel Alpha ;)

I had a few shots of Balkan 176 (88%!) last night, quite a nice taste, tingles on the tongue, then it hits you... I felt like I'd been shot in the chest with a blunderbuss! Holy carp!!!

Ok so for the first time last night managed to do a very quick blind tasting session. Only two vodkas in it but I had a point to prove to my mother. She is a vodka fan (being Finnish), also her fella and my sister were involved.

In one corner, my favourite 'bog standard' voddy, Finlandia.

In the other corner was Snow Queen.

Both bottles had been in the freezer overnight and we were drinking it neat. Well apart from my sister who will not drink it neat, so I allowed her to mix it with coke (yes, she is a vodka heathen).

The winner, by ALL votes, was Snow Queen. This stuff neat is lovely. Almost creamy in taste, with only minimal burn. I can shoot Finlandia all day long but going from one to the other really showed the quality difference. Finlandia just seemed to burn and had no dicernible flavour after drinking the Snow Queen. Another note is that the Snow Queen actually seems to improve as it warms up.

Even my mother had to admit that the Kazakhstan vodka peed all over the Finnish. :)

Will do the same with the Sipsmith (#139) when I open it.

Well I had my first taste of the Sipsmiths Vodka just now (pic in post 139).

I was not sure what to expect to be honest. An English barley vodka made in London?

Very pleasantly surprised. Very smooth with a slightly peppery taste. I am very impressed with the distiller for producing this in the UK. As usual, the water is key, and they use water from the Lydwell spring, which is the source of the river Thames. Pretty much the best (and only) spring to use for a London based distiller.

Very nice neat but I thought I should try it mixed, just for one drink to see how it goes. I can say that it mixes with tonic sublimely.

£26 a bottle out there on the internet. Well worth picking up. :)

I have a few little cocktail recipe cards and want to try this:

Black Cooler
50ml of decent vodka (Smirnoff Black is suggested)
100ml Apple juice
100ml Ginger ale

Pour vodka into an ice filled highball glass along with the apple juice, top with ginger ale and garnish with apple or lime wedge.

Although it doesn't say, with lots of ice obviously.

Yes!

Just found this being sold in the UK. Proper Finnish stuff is Koskenkorva.

On a side note, Sainsburys, well at least the big one in Reading, are selling Russian Standard for £9 a bottle. Had to buy two it is such a bargain. Might have to stock up some more as well! :D

It is very definitely Finnish, despite my general fondness for Finland I'm not convinced that makes it good in this case and certainly not at that price. However Salmiakki, there's a Finnish drink and it's often worth telling a Finn you've never had it before, it might not taste particularly nice but it does a job.

True, but it is more of a nostaglic drink for me. My mother is Finnish and it takes me back a few years.

I have some salmiakki kosu at the moment, but I save it for special occasions. :)

here is a pic I just took -

Sisu Viina is my favourite but the bottle is unfortunately, empty.

Finlandia has to usually suffice.
