voice chat pc

U

Depends how you are wanting to use it. Skype is more for small groups and will impact the pcs processing power. Mumble is server based and allows people to join in at any point - rather than having to have someone accept or agree a time to link.

The League of Legends thread also hosts a mumble server - generally we have around 15-30 people on at any time - Skype would struggle a tad :)

Thanks, by the sounds of it mumble is the way to go for larger groups of people.

I do Like to be able to use skype from my smartphone however, do you know of there will be a mumble client for iOS/android at some point?

It's absolutely not - what it does do is act as a central point for people to connect to without having to call/prearrange etc. I did try skype a while back and my pc was taking a hit on either network or pc lag either way both were unacceptable from a gaming front.

It would probably be worth trying them out before making a judgement call :)

I find talking to my friends frustrating on PC because I have to turn my game volume right down to hear anyone talking so I can hardly hear the game, When on xbox the chat was always louder than the game.

If i wanted to voice chat on skype for example then how would i seperate the voice chat from the games audio?

like it is on xbox 360

So split speakers and headphones? not sure the advantage but a USB headset would allow this to happen as they are effectively 2 sound devices

i would still say ts is better then mumble then vent

there is a free ocuk mumble but i t doesnt have the same as good options as ts3 dont care what nabs say :p

mumble and TS3 are both good. But TS3 deffo pulls an edge with features and sound quality. I hear mumble servers are cheap.

Both will let you set seperate output audio devices for game sound and voip sound.

In the past I would have mumble>vent>ts. Not really tried vent or ts for a couple of years so don't know if they pulled anything out of the bag that would change this. The big thing I found with mumble was the lack of lag you seemed to get which I experienced in TS and Vent. On top of this mumble is very cheap on commercial servers.

I host the LOL thread mumble - which again is no charge to those who play LOL here - I suspect LOL's OCukish mumble is more populated than the OCUK one. I assume the OCUK is also on a commercial server - or is it hosted at home?

TS2 was poor but TS3 is a massive improvement. Mumble iv only briefly used but was impressed. Vent i use regularly and its the definite underdog.

PEBCAK to be honest. I was a heavy TS2 user before eventually moving to mumble. Before doing so though, I gave TS3 a good run for it's money and although it's better than TS2 it still pales compared to mumble...'no matter what the nabs say'

Teamspeak 3 here also. However, having a dedicated server is obviously a lot better than just peer-to-peer voice chat.

For small groups, Skype. For larger groups, Mumble/Ventrilo.

When I tried skype it was quite resource hungry so wasn't really appropriate. But even if it had been a light app it really would only have been appropriate with very small groups - i.e 1 or 2 people because you need to all arrange the connection mutually. Whereas with the others you just connect in - no mutual consent required.

Do you have to pay for a mumble server ? I'm currently using Vent and paying £2.50 a month so if it's free I'd rather swap :)

Currently just using Vent for playing Dirt 3, CoD, BC2 etc with friends.
