VR - What are your thoughts?

Initially I agree, but it will be just a matter of time until other methods of control are discovered and/or created that improve the VR experience even further.

Think of how much games changed with the introduction of the wii remote as an example, everyone was very much WTF at the start but now it just makes sense.
 
The potential is massive alright. I’m still leaning towards Steam VR over Oculus for the experience but there seems to be more games for the oculus is this right? What games are there for Steam VR? Who’s developing them?
 
Just got back from the NEC, had a chance to try the Vive on 2 games.

Elite Dangerous andCrystal Rift all of which were great. BUT.

ED, I could clearly see pixels when I put the headset on, but as I played that soon vanished and I was immersed to the point where I actually felt like I was in the cockpit, it looked fantastic and the sense of scale was incredible.

Crystal Rift which was being demo'd as a standing experience, which by the way also showed off the Vive's incredible multiplayer possibilities (4 headsets being tracked by 2 light house boxes), for me the visuals were very clear, I couldnt see the pixels, I felt like I was standing there in a corridor, which is great, it's what you want BUT it was let down by the controls, an xbox pad, moving with the thumb stick felt disorientating to me and it took me some time to get used that, when I was finished I felt a little off which I wasn't expecting.

On the bases of those 2 games, I will still be buying the moment I can, the Elite Dangerous experience alone was worth the 380 mile drive.

My most played game of late (ED that is) and so pleased to hear it made it more immersive. Not played in a while in fairness but it is one of those that when fired up, I will play for a solid 6+ hours straight.

I have had a DK2 for just under a year. Some of the experiences are brilliant and have given me some of the best WOW moments I have had in years in gaming, The immersion in some games can be amazing, as others have said. ED is amazing and some of the racing games just feel more real.

However, the drawbacks such as motion sickness, resolution(screen door) etc are going to be a problem with the 1st generation but will, hopefully, improve with future generations of the products.

I do suffer from motion sickness, but it does improve over time and different experiences have a varying degree of an affect on me.
Roller Coaster sims make me want to hurl in seconds, but racing games and Elite are generally fine.
The resolution/screen door effect, is quite noticeable to begin with and if you go looking for it, but once you get into the game or experience it doesn't bother me.

I do feel it will still be quite niche for a while but hopefully people will stay interested and the companies will continue to improve the tech if the market is there for it.
 
Haven't kept up on the screen but is there any talk of using the Samsung 4K phone screen for the CV2? I would pay £350 to get it now, assuming it was 120Hz.
 
Announcement that the Rift should be around $300 seems promising.

Not saying it's cheap, but it's a heck of a lot less than a Swift.

Sweeney sees an explosion in demand for new experiences coming, as we find ways to put more visual computing power to work more efficiently. Put to artful use, technology able to render 9 million pixels per eye will be enough to satisfy the human mind’s desire for rich, immersive images.

“When you reduce the hardware to the size of your Oakley sunglasses and make it easy to carry around as a smartphone, that’s an experience that’s going to appeal to 4 billion people,” Sweeney said.

And we’ll get there whether or not engineers are able to create processors able to wring more work out of each watt of electricity. If Moore’s Law stalls, he argued that advances in software and hardware engineering will let developers pick up more of the “slack,” by eliminating inefficiencies in the way images are created and presented.
