I think because I've always until the last couple of years, had quite a rubbish PC.. I mean sure it could play most games at the time that I had it but never on full graphics and a lot of the time shadows gave it an issue.. I've always had vsync off.

Now that my PC is a little more competent I've been trying games with vsync on.. but I don't actually like it, it almost feels like mouse smoothing is on.. you know where theres a little delay before it stops.. though it doesn't feel as obvious as mouse smoothing, so I have to go back to vsync being off but the problem with that is, I can often see the tearing though with that the game feels much more responsive.

Is it just me.. have I just played games with it off for so long or is there a fix for this?

Not sure what you're getting at. Maybe it's just because I've always used V-Sync when I could and I don't notice it, but I've never related it to mouth smoothing, just locks fps at 60fps which is perfect imo.

I know what you mean but I can't stand screen tearing so I have always have vsync on.

The only alternative is to get a 120hz monitor I guess because I doubt most of us get over 120fps on modern games.

Im not quite sure that a 120hz monitor would fix the problem.. cant the human eye only see around 60fps and anymore isn't noticeable.. I'd be happy to try it but I dont need a new monitor just yet :P

Rainagul.. lemme try and explain, in an FPS when you aim/turn around and then stop aiming/turning that there is almost a fraction where it feels like its still moving, I guess catching up to where you are. Where as with vsync off.. when you stop, it stops that instant with no delay.

Mouse smoothing is almost 10x as bad as vsync for me, almost feels like when you run along some ice in a game and you stop pressing forward but you continue to move. Obviously thats an over exaggeration as you probably dont go that far but it just doesn't feel as responsive. As a result.. mouse smoothing always has to be off or I go into an ALL CAPS RAGE.

I think its a responsiveness issue that I've noticed.. and I've noticed it on any PC I've played on that it has to be set to off.

I`m the same, prefer vsync off

tearing doesn`t bother me in the slightest, don`t even notice it tbh :)

It never used to bother me when I had a PC that sucked but now its different I wanna see games in all their glory!

So tearing is starting to get to me but I feel incompetent with vsync off and from being very competitive in 1.6 I get raged with myself when I clearly could have made certain shots haha.

Honestly I don't even notice that happening, I've probably accommodated my play style in fps's to make up for it since I've always used V-sync

Always have v-sync on unless i play certain games online.
V-sync on does increase mouse lag (varies with each game) and playing a first person shooter online with mouse lag is a big no-no. Always forget to switch it off when i play that 1st game online tho :)
Even enabling v-sync thro gfx card options while on the desktop or just browsing the web, the mouse lag is there.

Glad its not just me then.. is there anyway to get the responsiveness of it being off, with it being on so it looks more fluent or am I shafted?

not just you mate, I cant have vsync on as I just notice the mouse lag too much, I use vsync if i'm playing a game with a control pad though, tearing sucks but not as much as mouse lag.

vsync has always gave me mouse lag, ive always had pc's that are more than capable of playing games on high.

as said
joypad = vsync on
anything else = vsync off

this all said ive never had major issues with tearing, theres the odd small bit now and again but on the whole not an issue.

Some games tear worse than others, I prefer vsync on big time however i'd have DXoverrider on with TB for D3D if i do so.

V-sync use to cause slowdowns when I used my old 8800GTS, however, when I had my 5770, I had it on in every game because it didn't make a difference to minimum frame rates if I had it on or off.

Is this something to do with triple buffering? I'm not particularly clued up on the workings of the buffers.

this is all new to me, lol
i had to google vsync and screen tearing, :o
at least i know about them now :D

edit. i have a hd5850 and a 60hz screen, so i should leave it off?

I hate screen tearing so much. I think I've played most games with vsync on.

Can't say I've noticed mouse lag much at all but might try it off just to see!

It's well known that v-sync causes mouse "lag/smoothing" when enabled. With Nvidia you can try eliminating it with the pre-rendering setting in the Nvidia control panel.

Any FPS over 60 will result in screen tearing. I imagine most of your games will run at higher than 60fps at some point and you will see the effect on the screen.

I bought a nice new 6950 2gb for Deus EX HR (replacing a 5770) and i dont know what its like for people with hdtv/monitors with refresh rates of higher than 60hz but if i have vsync switched off, the game is near enough unplayable. Thats everything maxxed out at dx11. I know Deus EX HR isn't that demanding on a gfx card but its the only pc game i have played recently.

Had to put vsync on as soon as i saw the tearing.

Might boot up Dirt 3 and max that out without vsync on. My 5770 couldnt quite manage highest settings, i imagine my 6950 should breeze through it
