Hiya,

I was just wondering, I'm considering buying a VW touran and was wondering which engine I would be better off going for... the 1.9 TDI or the 2.0 TDI.

Are there any pro's and cons if I'm not interested in speed?

More reliability than anything else.

Thanks,

G

I'm assuming you mean these engines?

1.9 TDI with 77 kW / 105 hp
2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 hp
2.0 TDI with 125 kW / 170 hp

The 1.9TDI will be acceptable but not exactly fast. The 170bhp 2.0TDI is a much better engine - all around quicker and a lot more "eager" feeling. The turbo lag however, is quite noticable. I'd expect the 140bhp version to be somewhere in between.

I think it comes down to budget really. None are more/less reliable than the other so you're looking at what you can afford. I was once told that after a Nuclear Holocaust, the only two things to survive would be cockroaches and VAG diesel engines, make of that what you will. ;)

The 1.9 TDI is noisy, slow, unrefined, rattly and generally utterly awful.

THe 2.0 TDI is noisy, not quite as slow, a little more refined and only slightly awful.

Get the 2.0 TDI.

lol fair enough. Anyone know how much the road tax will be on each?

I had no idea there was a 170bhp model. can't see any stating that on auto trader

Thanks,

G

My dad had the older 1.9 TDI (90HP?) and it was like Fox said, rattly, noisey, turbo lag, etc. but upgraded to the 2.0 and it was a lot different, no major turbo lag, no rattle, a little noisey but not bad for a diesel and respectable MPG.

Tax is £155 on my Leon with the same 170bhp engine. The other versions will be cheaper - the 1.9TDI is £120.

And I got my info from Wiki.

2.0 TDI DPF 2005–2010 I4 16V BMN 1968 cc 125 kW (170 PS; 168 hp) @ 4200 rpm 350 N·m (260 lb·ft) @ 1750–2500 rpm

Tut, tut, tut......

Agree with your comments about the 1.9, though I would add another negative and that is its a smokey engine. I've lost count of the number of VAG TDi 130s with a trail of soot following them whilst the driver accelerates up an incline. I'm assuming the later DPF equipped cars don't have this problem.

The 2.0 TDi is a different beast. Common rail direct injection, more powerful and more efficient. Very good on the motorway and it feels thrusty, with good mid range - you really wouldn't think it has 140bhp. 70-100mph in no time at all, and at a cruise and on the motorway this engine in the Golf Mk V is refined (as far as diesels go). It works well. The downsides is that you notice the diesel clatter at idle waiting at lights (it never disappears even when the engine is warm) and is a big grumbly but noticeably better than the 1.9. Obviously, the 170bhp version is a corker. Take a Golf Mk IV GT TDi out for weekend for example, and I'm sure you'll come back on Monday morning with a different view.

Obviously, usual caveats apply regarding high mileage diesel and the various engine 'bits' failing / needing replacing.

I wouldn't say the 170hp version is a "corker" but it's a good fun engine to drive as long as you remember that it does NOTHING below 2K and above 4.5K revs.

Certainly more than enough to keep a smile on my face. It's not really smooth though, cabin shudders slightly and it sounds very dagdagdag. And the power delivery is anything but smooth - but as said above it's easy to keep it on power.

Just one thing about the 2.0, depending on the year of make it can be either Pump Duse or Common Rail tech. I have the 2.0 140 PD, does the job, bit noisy tho.

I'm thinking about the 1.9 at the moment, I've found a nice example near me that done 59,000 miles on a 53 plate, it's in very good condition but it's £7000.

It's got a full history and he's going to do the CAM belt for me before I buy. He also mentioned he will do a full PDI check.

Is this a fair price or should I be looking elsewhere?

£7000 for a 7 year old 1.9TDI!?

I'm guessing you think it's too much then :(

I'm really struggling to find something suitable.

In auto trader I've put less than 7k, diesel, less than 60,000 miles.
Close to HP13 6RG.

There aren't that many about, there were some I thought looked great, but were CAT C :(

I've got 1 week to find something.

It's a diesel, you dont buy a diesel to do 5k a year around town so most will be more than 60,000 miles.

This is the one I was looking at:

He said he'd do 7k for cash.

I've never bought a high milage car before, the one I've just sold was a 52 plate Golf with 37,000 on it. My other car is a 59 plate Golf with 6k on it.

Just a bit scared of them I guess.

what sort of milage would be reasonble for one of these?

The 2.0 only went common rail about 12 months ago when it was installed in the Mk6 and the facelifted A3. The Mk5 variants were PD but later ones had DPF fitted. It's possible VW might have snuck a few CR engines into the very last Mk5s for testing but it's very few cars.

My dad worked his way through 2x VW Charon TDIs and a Touran TDI and put more than 200,000 miles on the charons and over 100,000 on the Touran and they were still running great with minimal maintenance costs. Hes now on a Passat which hes put 80K miles on and the only problems were due to shoddy work at the garage.

EDIT: One of the Charons was bought by a local taxi firm and was still running a couple of months back so its probably got around 400,000 miles on the clock by now.
