VW 1.9 TDI vs 2.0TDI?

The 2.0L has 16valves where as the 1.9 has only 8, if it makes any difference ;)

In my opinion the 2.0L is very nice to drive with a great bit of poke, the 170bhp especially, but you could always get your 140bhp mapped i guess.

The 1.9 is not the best of engines for the touran, it seems just not pokey enough.

Its up to you, all are great on fuel.

I've never bought a high milage car before, the one I've just sold was a 52 plate Golf with 37,000 on it. My other car is a 59 plate Golf with 6k on it.

What sort of useage do you give your car?

There are many reports of people who do many short trips having issues with cars fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter. The response is that these cars need to be given regular long runs. If you're planning on doing the same distances you did in the Golf the chances are you'll have problems.

The 1.9 TDI is noisy, slow, unrefined, rattly and generally utterly awful.

THe 2.0 TDI is noisy, not quite as slow, a little more refined and only slightly awful.

Get the 2.0 TDI.

The 1.9TDI 130ps was slightly less slow and noisy than the 105ps one I have now, which is pretty woeful :(

I would go with the 2.0 as well. Either that or something entirely different :)

The MPV will get very little usage to be honest. It will be going from High Wycombe to Amersham twice a week and other short journeys. With a trip up north to Bridlington 4 or so times a year.

All the rest of my milage (about 20k per year) will be in the MK6.

Notice the nice, dependable, zero hassle petrol engine.

There's nothing undependable or any kind of hassle about the VAG TDIs either?

Errrgh, I personally don't find the 170ps 2.0TDI particularly great on fuel.

It's a diesel, you dont buy a diesel to do 5k a year around town so most will be more than 60,000 miles.

This. I do nearly £20K a year and I was looking at a mixture of petrol and diesel cars.

If i was looking at a new diesel car i'd prob look at the latest spec bmw 120d engines. Although the reliability and economy of the VAG diesels seem to get very good praise.
The 1.9 130bhp or the 2.0 140bhp would be the best choice of the engines.

I've had my vw boro 1.9 tdi (130) workhorse for 4 years now, its a 2002 reg.
Regarding economy i get 60+ mpg on back roads to work everyday and its got the grunt required for easy overtaking.

Me either, unless you're nursing it EVERYWHERE.
The 140 is better but the 1.9s are better still.

I get about 35-40MPG in the 2.0TDI, compared to over 50MPG with the 1.9TDI.

Then again, they're a world apart in performance.

Why diesel then?

To be honest I always thought Diesels will do more miles before they die and do more miles per gallon. That's the only reason.

Should I be considering Petrol too?

Would a 1.6 pull a Touran well enough as they are relatively cheap compared to the Diesels.

For example: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...n/page/1/postcode/hp156np/radius/60?logcode=p

Or even this 2.0 is cheaper. But 69,000 miles: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...n/page/1/radius/60/postcode/hp156np?logcode=p

Deisels tend to do more miles because... people drive them further. Most people with a need to cover large mileages will buy a diesel, which is why you find many more high mileage diesel cars.

If you are hardly using your car you wont find the MPG becomes an issue.

I have the new TDI 140 CR engine, and after 600 miles my average economy is 46mpg, with 55mpg achievable in the evening when the roads are quiet.

This is hardly because they are all dead though is it, these cars are worth enough that if an engine failed it would be replaced. It's because high mileage Tourvan owners bought diesel.
