So I recently moved and now do 25 miles a day commute. 20 of those miles are on an A road.

It's been 2 weeks and i'm already sick of screaming along at 7K RPM. I'm tempted to change sprocket size to bring that down, but it'll most likely just ruin the bike's performance (GSX650F).

My question to you is: How many RPMs are you doing in top gear at 85mph?..... on the autobahn obviously, officer.

under 4 k on my zx10 if I remember right (its very tall geared though)

bout the same as you on my zx6r,need to double check though

899 sits around 5500 at 85 in 6th but it is geared pretty short and tops out at 165 ish.

This is a good website for checking out gearing, rpm and speed in gears if you haven't already seen it: http://www.gearingcommander.com/

Remember to select mph units from the drop down :)

I am +2 -1 on my gearing so that wont help on the higher up stuff, but I am guessing around 5-6k maybe, I will check on the ride home later.

It's not too bad, 7k is the VTEC zone crossover point, so cruising at 70 means I'm always in the sweet spot to accelerate - anything lower and I'd really have to drop a gear if I needed to make a quick exit :p Top speed is 120mph apparently.

But what I lose in high speed stuff I gain in low speed, town work - my bike will happily do 20-25mph in top gear, 2000rpm. A big v-twin or a litre IL4 needs a load of clutch slipping, 1st gear at 2-3000 rpm for me is probably 2-3 mph!

You see now why I want a bigger bike for touring!

Just over 6k on my SV, starts kicking on the door of 8k around 20mph above that. On a private race track.

Just under 4k according to that link, I'll double check tonight on the way home. Doesn't both me anyway, now the wind blast....

I'm less than 5mins on the motorway anyway so not a problem.

That link defaults to km/h if you missed the drop down :)

I will check how much I can get for my bike and see if I can p/x for something around the £4k mark that's 1L and nicer to commute and tour on.

This one time, on an abandoned air strip, I saw 4.5k rpm @ ~85mph on my VFR1200. I felt scared, so I slowed back down to 69.5mph again.

There's a mentalist on the Biker Banter forums at PH that has bought a 125cc scooter to do a 100mile daily commute because he likes the idea of saving petrol. I just can't imagine how tedious that would be.

It was moving from an 8 mile each way to a 18 mile each way commute that made me get my full licence rather than stick to the 125, I now get roughly 35mpg less but I don't want to kill myself while I crawl up a hill at 10mph.

100 miles a day on one is just mental.

If you want to make a significant difference to your cruising revs by altering the gearing you're going to ruin the bikes ability to pull away from a standstill and as a result most likely burn out your clutch within a few hundred miles.
