Warhammer 40k (Henry Cavill and Amazon)

At least we know they have a hardcore fan high up in the decision making process. So someone will be there fighting for the IP, which I'm not sure we can say about any of Amazons other big adaptions. If this turns out to be **** it won't be for lack of passion from Cavill that's for sure.

Well, I'm super excited. Amazon are not traditionally great at adapting with respect, but Cavill is a 40K superfan, and having him in the executive producer seat should really help keep this feeling 'right'. I understand tweaks to suit different mediums, but hopefully this time round it'll do the universe and setting and justice, rather than stealing it and doing something different.

There are plenty of settings and characters it could follow without needing mega budget immediately; the initial announcements do make it sound like this could be a multiple series/film sort of deal also, with Cavill in the 'Feige' seat, ala Marvel, and starring in at least something. Something with an Inquisitor/Adeptus Arbites/Imperial Guard, could certainly start on a more human level, before expanding into more obviously intergalactic territory.

He's said before IIRC he didn't go for Eisenhorn as once you star in a universe, you're that character so he wanted to be careful and get a big enough role. Wonder if he'll go for something like a Primarch, I could kinda see him being playing someone like the Lion, and there are heavy rumours he'll be back for 10th Edition. GW do like tie-ins across the setting with books/new editions so I could see him playing a character like that, as it doesn't get much bigger in Lore (beyond the Emperor), than a Primarch.

Wonder what's going on with the Eisenhorn series too, could potentially all get brought under this umbrella if done well.

It pretty much has to be a Space Marine led series, that is where the money is unfortunately. I think we can rule out Horus Heresy, it's far too big a story.

They could do something with Blood Ravens, they're the most well known in 'public' eyes because of the Dawn of War series. Either that or adapt the Space Marine game which I hope not because it had no story at all and was boring Ultramarines.

Other option is they do current timeline but that has a lot of 'lore knowledge' required.

Or they just make up something new.

He's an executive producer this time. But still, I'd expect some changes to make it more accessible for the general public.

From that press release it sounds like it could be multiple projects.

Nothing wrong with making it more accesible, but totally ignoring the source material, sidelining the main character in his own story, and making it a fem-driven show just for the sake of woke ideology is not.

Let's see what happens, I know very little of WH, but still I'd love an enjoyable fantasy show to watch as the recent ones have all been bloody awful.

The fact he refers to a 'Warhammer Cinematic Universe' and that they talk about 'big and small screens' is probably the more interesting part of the announcement for me - this suggests plans are on a fairly grand scale and we'll hopefully get a few different series and movies looking at different aspects of the lore and different races etc. rather than one generic 'Warhammer 40k' series that tries to cover it all.

I would assume that is just an 'if successful then' statement. I highly doubt we're going to get multiple series and films off the bat.

Yes, more than likely but it would still help drive things in a particular direction - if the grand plan is a universe, then they'll likely not be planning a generic 'do it all' series that tries to do so much it fails at everything - they'll be able to focus on a smaller story to start with, do it justice, and build from it.

Wish it would happen but Games Workshop wont allow it. The studios will want the entire thing and GW wont part ways. Its the same issue with popular fiction novels to movie.

GW are very loose with licensing out their IP. They give it to any games dev who pays. That is why there are so many shovelware GW games.

There's somewhere between 1-3 million "physical game" 40K players, then on top of that there's PC/Console gamers who many not play the physical game and then there's just Fans of Cavill who will also fill up the viewers of any 40K series too.

I'd be most concerned about the CGI cost vs budget TBH, rather than script etc with Cavill as an exec onboard.

40k is such a great universe.

‘Grim dark’ - that’s the vibe.

Interesting to see how they could pull this off on screen though, since it’s this very menacing hyper violent world, but all of that is ‘off paper’ and hidden behind static imagery in the game itself.

Will it be easy on the swears and nudity…? Those seem fairly essential for an adult show these days. It’ll be easy to get the balance wrong.

Also fans of the books and other materials, whilst largely the demographics will overlap to an extend, there are likely people who are uniquely part of one aspect of the hobby/setting. Plus, if they transition it well, there's a good chance it could pickup fans from the wider Scifi/action demographics. The setting is huge, so theoretically could cover a vast range of topics, although I'm hoping we don't get a GOT High Lords of Terra series, at least not yet!!

That said, at least with Amazon behind it, the money is theoretically there for the CGI etc. I mean, they essentially have the money to fund Hollywood blockbusters and then some.

Edit: The BBC article is terrible, it's largely missed the point this is on about the 40K universe aka SCIFI and not the fantasy Warhammer universe. What a terrible introduction to what is coming lol It also states its yet to be officially confirmed, when GW, Amazon AND Cavill have all announced it themselves. What terrible writing!!
