Warhammer 40k (Henry Cavill and Amazon)

40k is such a great universe.

‘Grim dark’ - that’s the vibe.

Interesting to see how they could pull this off on screen though, since it’s this very menacing hyper violent world, but all of that is ‘off paper’ and hidden behind static imagery in the game itself.

Will it be easy on the swears and nudity…? Those seem fairly essential for an adult show these days. It’ll be easy to get the balance wrong.

I think Vertigo's filmography speaks for itself, mostly horror/dark stuff with a sprinkling of Lego. They're made for it :p

I've heard of this but to me it's like dungeons and dragons, very niche to be honest, not even slightly interesting to me.

If the average man in the street even knows what this is (off course it's popular on Ocuk for obvious reasons!) I bet they say "something to do with kids and nerds painting mini figures". I know there's a new D and D film coming at some point but there's a reason these things haven't come to the big screen and succeeded, there's just no interest!

Henry Cavill was Superman and then he was The Witcher and then Sherlock Holmes. This is a huge step down no matter how it's painted! :D

He's an executive producer this time. But still, I'd expect some changes to make it more accessible for the general public.

From that press release it sounds like it could be multiple projects.
Given the breadth of the 40k universe they could do all sorts of very different, but linked stuff, ranging from say the Imp guard (Gaunts) where they are mainly dealing with other humans, to a Marine centric them, to something more politicial/thriller (inquisitors or imperial governors etc).
It's probably at least accessible to the general public as many other things, with the advantage that there is a large base of people who have played the tabletop games and the computer games going back 20+ years.

If it's anything like Rings of Power, then forget everything you know about 40k Lore because it will all be thrown out of the window

As much as I'd love 40k series or films, it's going to be really hard to do as every faction are evil racists hell bent on genocide of the other factions and the universe is so absolutely depressing and devoid of hope, but that's what makes it so awesome too which is great on paper but on film I don't think it would work, as I'm not sure in todays climate of wokeness how any writer would be brave enough to make a genocidal faction likeable to an audience so they have something to root for.

Yeah the lack of heroes and inherent horribleness of every single species is a little obstacle to wider appeal. That is why it'll probably be a smaller focus story like Ultramarines defending against Tyranids or something and they'll just 'handwave' the whole religious zealot side of the universe.

1: Amazon only had the rights to the LOTR appendices.

2: They hired showrunners who only had one credit to their name and recommended by Jar Jar Abrams. (The destroyer of franchises)

Who knows what we end up with but GW and Henry involved it will be made with passion not by people who hate the source material.

There's also the Black Library to work from.

There's some awsome TV shows on amazon.

Frak, feff, Throne On Earth, heretic scum…. More swearies on Loose Women.

For those who haven't checked GW main website.

Games Workshop and Amazon Studios are working together to bring the Warhammer 40,000 universe to screens, big and small alike*.

And there’s more! One of Warhammer’s most famous superfans, Henry Cavill (well-known for pointing out chandeliers that look like Blackstone Fortresses) is on board, too. He’s bringing his lore expertise to the mantle of Executive Producer, and his sword arm to the starring role.

Also GW are from memory fairly well known for basically keeping control/requiring approval of any story features in anything they licence to try and avoid issues with say a game veering wildly from the tabletop/book canon.
I can't imagine they're going to be less careful with a live action TV show than they've been with something like 30 video games, hundreds of books, and several of their own produced series etc.
IIRC it's one of the reasons they haven't done any TV/film's with outside companies and part of the reason they didn't really do video games for quite a long time after their initial deal with EA for Heroquest, Space Hulk, Choas Gate and Final Liberation.

Thinking about it, I'd imagine a film about titan battles would be an easy sell to a very wide audiece given how popular things like Pacific Rim and all the mech anime and video games.

Got to admit I am very surprised GW did a deal. Normally the studios want everything. Glad they worked something out.

Strong female character.
Princeps of a warlord titan :p
Nearly all imperial navy and space marine barge captains seem to be female.

I remember him having a big thing for the custodes. He could easily play one. Given their more individual nature it might be better than a space marine Captain/squad etc blah.

I hope it's not Tyranids. That boring that's aliens all over again.

Orcs would be a cockney cringe fest but so much CGI and probably too brutal.

A murder mystery detective theme. Inquisitional host and entourage.
Meh it could be done, it's probably most likely given the recent success of darktide.
The ease of everyone being humanish.
But it's not like starwars were xenos can mix openly with humanity.

Eldar meh. What about a anti china Tau series.. :p i could watch Cavell stamping on tau for a few series.

Imperial guard POV war film... Sure why not but any conflict is going to feel way too small and not do justice.

HH is were it's at but would need to be so epic. Too epic for TV .

Void battles please include some....

Woke space marines will make me very sad.

The problem as I see it with Warhammer 40,000, as a complete ignoramus, is that the lore is so dense and confusing.

My only real engagement with the IP is playing Chaos Gate: Demonhunters this year and I didn't have a clue what was happening half the time.

This is the synopsis on Wikipedia and it's not exactly easy to follow for people who aren't up on all this:

The Grey Knights are a secret order of the Imperium of Man. They are a chapter of Adeptus Astartes composed of psychics created by the Emperor of Mankind and Malcador the Sigilite for the purpose of combating the daemonic forces of chaos.

In the game's prologue, Captain Agravain of the Grey Knight Strike Force, Xiphos, battles on the fallen planet of Gaheris against a Khornate warhost, led by the Bloodthirster, Ere'khul. Agravain manages to banish Ere'khul, but he and most of his squad die in the process. Ectar, a Grey Knight Purifier aboard the strike cruiser, the Baleful Edict as part of punishment detail for reckless actions in a previous mission appoints one of the survivors of the campaign as the strike force's new commander. Ectar and the Adeptus Mechanicus Dominus, Lunete, travel to their home base of Titan for debriefing and repairs when they are intercepted by Inquisitor Kartha Vakir of the Ordo Malleus.

I don't think the world is ready for Warhammer's strong women!!!

"There's no female space marines bleh bleh bleh"

How about some Sisters Repentia!!

Some Sisters of Silence if we going down the custodies route hah Melt down would be glorious.
