Waxed Jackets - Anyone have any experience with them?

They are hard wearing, but cold/stink etc.
When we were kids, my mum went through a phase of thinking she was a farmer because we lived in Wales and had 6 chickens - so the family got decked out in stinking wax jackets for day to day use which was a great cause of embarrassment to us.

I have nice memories of the wax smell. I guess my grandparents wore them when they were walking the dogs so it's quite nostalgic for me. That never smelled bad to me, always nice.

Depends which one you get and how thickly lined for how warm it is.

None of the other points are real issues I find.

Saying that mines pretty furry at the moment, I accidentally left it in my truck bed thats not water tight and its covered it mould. Quick wipedown and itl be fine im sure.

They was all the rage when I was teen, massive internal pocket for the catapult and other shenanigans you require at that age.

I remember it being bloody cold, bloody heavy, sweat like a nun watching a exorcism with all the other layers you had to put under. If i lived in the sticks again would purchase :)

I've been known to pressure wash mine before  Got it covered in sawdust!

They go with a brace of pheasants and a Purdey on the arm.

Thanks all.

I went to JL yesterday has tried a few Barbour jackets on, after I did I could feel/see the wax on my hands. So transfer is real but guess as it’s a new jacket.

Think il pass on it for now. I was also looking at M65 field jackets. Might grab a Frahm to see what it’s like and if it’s worth the money.

The Barbour shop at Cheshire oaks might be worth a punt as they often have last seasons cheap.

Check Carhartt out for the work wear jackets if that's what you're after.

Another option to consider, although a little more expensive, is the motorcycle range of Belstaff jackets. Their motorcycle range is made of a slightly different material which is less waxy. It is equally, if not more, water resistant because they also have a sewn in water resistant drop liner. So they have a slightly waxy outer to repel water and also a water resistant inner lining. I recently tried on a Belstaff Crosby even though I don't currently have a motorbike. when I took out the shoulder and elbow armour it felt like a regular wax jacket (they just slide out of little pockets inside). I expect they will also be harder wearing and slightly warmer than regular wax jackets as they will be thicker in places to meet the necessary abrasion tests. I could just about feel the waxy texture but it didn't come off in my hands. So I don't think transfer would be an issue, especially after wearing it a few times.

Belstaff came back into British ownership a few years ago so it's a British brand again (although I guess they are still made in cheaper locations).

Sorry Hades but Belstaff is the new Stone Island. Yes it is fashionable, fits well, last long - but my god does it attract right dickheads.
