Waxed Jackets - Anyone have any experience with them?

I love my Barbour, had it around 6 years. Rewaxed it once myself, bit of a pain, sent it back this year to be done by Barbour and it came back like a new jacket.

Really comfy, lightweight, waterproof, goes with any situation. Worth the uplift over other waterproofs imo.

I’ve got a Barbour jacket too and think it needs rewaxing. Did you have to pay Barbour for the rewax or is it covered by the guarantee?

Waxed Jackets you say? Yes I have experience from the 1980s. Is the yuppie faux farmer trend back??

You’ll be asking about Campri Ski Jackets next!

I’m looking at buying a jacket for everyday winter, I’ve always wanted a waxed jacket but a few things I’ve read about them puts me off.

1. They are not actually very warm
2. They get cold/damp when they get wet.
3. Any clothing you wear under will get wax on it?
4. Wax transfer to car seats etc
5. Wax melts if jacket kept in boot of car on a warmer day
6. Not a con but I know they need rewaxing when needed.

if true then. All seems a bit pointless.

I wear a shirt to work so will be wanting to wear it over that.

or is this the wrong use case? I.e keep the jacket at home in the porch and wear it for dog walking along with hunter boots :D

Am I better off getting a technical jacket?

I’ve also come across Frahm jackets too which look good https://frahmjacket.com/

Why are they all so ugly?

Though tbh, judging by the models the target market seems to be middle aged males with a mid life crisis so I suppose it fits the cliche

its the design aspect and what goes into the Frahm jacket that intrigues me.

I went ahead and ordered a Peregrine Bexley Men's Wax Jacket yesterday to see if it was any good, arrived today and im very impressed. Has the cut that I wanted and i dont look like a farmer lol, id say more of the Bellstaff look?

Im impressed! fits great, looks great, decent spec with British Millerain 8oz Waxed Cotton.

Its not as shiny as the stock images make it look, its matt really.

in what way was it a faff? My girlfriend has started wearing my Barbour which I stopped wearing as needed to wax it and couldn’t be bothered. Now she’s wearing it I should wax it before she moans she’s soaking.

Is it just a pain getting a good result/takes a while?

It’s only £30 for Barbour to do it which seems good value as the wax is a tenner!

Had one for about 30 years, but I do live in the countryside, and I have shot at people things occasionally. Goes with the flat cap.
Although these days it pretty much is just a dog walking coat. I can't actually remember ever re waxing it and it's still waterproof.

My beef with winter jackets is that unless you're just stood around outside, you'll be moving from A to B... and most coats / jackets seem to get unbearably hot.

So if I know I'll be walking around to a destination, I'd much rather be a little chilly and not arrive in a sweaty mess than.... arrive as a sweaty mess. Go with a hat and gloves if needed...

Also... umbrellas! For almost all of your rain needs. If it's raining too much and your umbrella is thwarted.... move indoors :o :D

For anyone wishing to regulate your temperature well, wear this shirt (with a tshirt underneath) - I think it's amazing for being out and about. Keeps you warm without overheating. https://www.timberland.co.uk/shop/e...flannel-check-shirt-for-men-in-black-a5y7sb23

Worth it rather than faffing around melting the wax and applying with sponge etc, plus putting lots of newspaper down to stop wax getting everywhere from drips and when you turn jacket over(also need to hang it somewhere to dry fully)... let barbour do it....and comes back looking like brand new.
I've got the Corbridge, or a variant of it..when it looses it's wax, colour changes from the dark brown to a more dull red brown..also looses it's waterproofness funnily enough..i view mine as more of a autumn/spring jacket..wont keep you toasty unless lots of layers in winter, but again, when out and about, don't want a thick coat that I have to unzip etc to cool down..and yes, a lot less concerned about scrambling through bushes etc than my winter coat

I like that a lot, especially as it's still made in the UK. Funnily enough I had an email from Herring Shoes today saying they are stocking this exact jacket. I can't make out the colour. Is it the black or a khaki/olive colour?

EDIT: nevermind, I can see it's black in the direct link to the site.
