Wayne Rooney: Has he lived up to the hype

This was the actual quote that sparked it all off, however most of it gets conveniently left out..

Moyes believes Rooney’s best position is up front rather than a deeper midfield role.
He said: “Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. Overall my thought on Wayne is, if for any reason we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we’ll need him.
“I want to be able to play the two of them, I want to use Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez as well.
“I want to give myself as many options as possible.

Rooney *should* play second fiddle to RVP, and that's being harsh on Hernandez because he's more reliable.
Moyes is wrong though, he shouldn't be talking about playing off the striker either, because Kagawa is so much better at that. Suppose he can play second fiddle to him too.

I would play him ahead of Welbeck on the left-wing though, so Wayne can take pride in that.

Im right with you on that - although I would suggest Young is first choice on the left wing (and that's only marginal, as WR should never be deployed there in the 1st place)

Playing deeper of course Rooney got fewer goals last season. He can still be a top player with the right level of fitness which can only come through personal motivation.
Moyes might be trying to provoke Rooney to get fitter but I dont think Rooney has taken that challenge on.

regardless of the ill talk about him we miss him when he doesn't play he brings an extra spark to most games.

They're trying to make out like they aren't trying to get rid of him to drive up the transfer fee, and to try and anger Rooney so he excepts one of the inevitably lower wage offers he'll get from the clubs that offer him a way out. Well done Moyes.

Someone cap that post from DM. It's only 1.5 lines long!

On the subject, I think the (actual) quote from Moyes is fair enough. He's saying that they'll be reliant on Rooney if RvP gets injured, and that is true. They'll also be (more) reliant on RvP if Rooney gets injured.

Stands to reason that you'll need your other top players if a top player gets injured. Don't know what the fuss is about.

So it seems that one of the best managers of the modern era rates our fat, not as good as he used to be lazy second choice sticker SO highly, he is prepared to swap his clubs player of the year and by far and away best player by MILES + cash for him.

Either Maureen is mental or the fans who have been sticking the boot into wayne recently know **** all.

My personal opinion, is that this, just like the fibreglass bid, is nonsense.

Unfortunately it's had a big media spin, half or more of the actual quote left out by most places, made some big headlines and Waynes been buying The Sun for page 3 and ending up reading the **** and believes it.

EDIT: If we do sell Wayne, we'd need to buy in a striker, even if we get whatever these mental stories are (Fab/Mata) because I wouldn't feel confident with Welbeck as our third striker. Hernandez/RvP, sure, but I would fear that after that we'd need another goal scoring striker.

Only at United do we need to put the qualifier 'goal scoring' before striker :D

Rooney has always run back into our half to collect the ball. This didn't just magically start last season. He's not played any deeper, he just doesn't have the effort/inclination/legs/ability to beat people for Man Utd any more and didn't shoot. There were countless times when the shot was right there and he wouldn't take it. If you don't shoot, you don't score. It's a convenient excuse for Wayne. He's spent seasons playing out wide and still scored.

Why does he run back? Because every time the ball goes to welbeck or the rest of then they end up kicking the ball off the pitch. If he doesn't run back he doesn't get much ball time.

Not strictly true for the duration of the 9 years he's been with us though is it.
We didn't do too bad for a team who always kicked the ball out to win numerous Premier League titles, numerous League Cup titles, a European Cup (plus 2 more finals) and a World Club Championship.

Unless Rooney was responsible for winning all of those on his own? Including the Champions League we won (which he was dragged off in.)
