Wayne Rooney: Has he lived up to the hype

To be fair, I didn't believe you.

To be fair he's on 200/250k per week salary, since he signed the new contract back in late 2010? he's been ****. Lets put it in perspective he's on a similar salary to Ronaldo and Messi, for that sort of money he should be in the best possible condition every season and every time he puts on the Man United shirt, its the bare minimum you'd expect from a player on that sort of salary.

I really cannot understand how people can defend him, if he is world class he's far, far from showing it.

No swearing. Gilly.

Rooney is no where near world class.

When you look at what players are considered world class - Messi, Ronaldo, Iniesta etc, Rooney is so far away from where these players are.

Rooney has lost his appetite for the game, clearly not for food though ;)

There are better foreigners playing in the Premier League today.

Rooney is the poster boy for English football, he's probably worth more to clubs off the pitch than he is on it.

Rooney, on his day, is a top class footballer. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have his day very often any more. Shame really, I remember very clearly when he broke through at Everton, he was one of the most exciting talents I'd ever seen. Man Utd, while making him a better all-round player, coached that unpredictability out of him, to his detriment IMO.

He lost that fire and it tempered his passion. Not been the same since.
The only way Man Utd would miss him is in shirt sales and there'd be a few upset morons in the stands. You know, the ones who chant "Rooney, Rooney" after finally making a pass within 20 minutes of a game.

hes average end of.

Interesting definition of average.

The question is "Has he lived up to the hype?" and that was that he was going to be the greatest English footballer of all time. So ultimately, no, he hasn't.

His form has dipped, not just last season, but for a few years now and that rawness has gone, but that's also what led to him taking risks, being exciting and doing the unbelievable. That was coached out of him, he became a more consistent player, but a less special one because of it.

Now he's at a club where he's not the best Striker, not the best CF, not the best Number 10, nor the best midfielder and trying to fit him in the team, as we did last season, actually hurts us more than it helps.

Now on top of that, he's crossed the fans twice and rocked the boat all whilst so woefully out of form that there's really no reason to bend over and take the gamble of resigning him to huge wages regardless of how good he can be 'on his day.'

No.

However, he is a world class forward.

world class my arse. When you put him in a line up with players like Messi, Ronaldo, most of the Spain National Squad, he comes out looking decidely average. He is jsut another over hyped 'I think I am world class' like most of the England first team.

World class has absolutely no strict definition in football though.

world-class
adj.
1. Ranking among the foremost in the world; of an international standard of excellence; of the highest order: a world-class figure skater.
2. Great, as in importance, concern, or notoriety.

Well he clearly fits both categories. He's been nominated for the Ballon d'Or multiple times so he clearly ranks amongst the foremost in his field.

World Class a lot like 'Legend' is overused in football.

I always like to think of it as....does he scare the opposition when he plays for United/England?

In this case, of course he does, he's probably the only Englishman since Gazza that does.

I agree that the phrase 'legend' and 'world class' are over used.

For me, 'World class' just means that you're the best or second, maybe third best in your position in the world, that there are only one or two players that would challenge you for your role in a team.

Very dependant on systems and tactics et cetera.

he far from an average bmi :D

Rooney would get into most teams in the world. That make him worldclass. He would do better at a different club.

He would start 95% of games at 95% of clubs across the globe, so in that sense he is world class, clearly we know there are far better players out there. But he is in that top bracket IMO

The relationship withe fergie clearly became strained. Lets see with a good pre-season how he performs under the new management

stating the obvious but it would be silly to sell him to an English side for sure.

It could just be because there is a bit of media interest in him but a few United players have come out to say that he looks the best he has in pre-season for about 5 years. Hopefully with a few additions and a Rooney who gives a ****, we should do well this season.
