Wayne Rooney: Has he lived up to the hype

My definition of world glass would be as follows: "A player who would be included in a 23-man squad picked from the best players in the world with no restrictions'".

Would rooney make such a 'world 23'? Probably not.

Probably. He's regarded highly on the continent.

Also, not sure a full pre-season matters, he's had plenty, he's always been unprofessional about his shape in the past. Only two years ago we had to send him off to America for a fitness bootcamp!

He would start 95% of games at 95% of clubs across the globe, so in that sense he is world class, clearly we know there are far better players out there. But he is in that top bracket IMO

The relationship withe fergie clearly became strained. Lets see with a good pre-season how he performs under the new management

stating the obvious but it would be silly to sell him to an English side for sure.

He doesnt even start 95% of the time for Utd not alone anyone else :p

Looking at those stats he's played more than 10 full seasons in the EPL (more than 25 games in every season) and only 3 times has he scored more than 15 league goals.

Read into that what you will (not least the fact that he hasn't always been deployed as a striker) but considering the amount of flak people gave players like Owen on the basis of league goals stats it makes interesting viewing if you play it that way (by comparison, Owen had done it 6 times at the age of 24).

Well answer me this, if the England players are worth so much then why did the USA football team come out their world cup group above england. Rooney makes more than the entire USA team I would imagine

They came out ahead on goals scored which is the slimmest of margins and the only reason they got a point against us was because Green spacked it up, you can hardly blame Rooney for that.

Also don't forget the World Cup was played 3 years ago before Rooney signed his current bumper deal so the likes of Dempsey, Donovan and Howard were probably raking in over half of Rooney's salary just from them 3.

.

The "problem" is he plays for a club in the top 1% (and probably 0.01% lol)

If he was always fit....and never asked to leave.... there wouldn't be a problem. However currently there ARE better players (consistently) in his position which Man Utd should try and go after.

(to start with at least) they would also demand a lot less money as well and probably have a deeper hunger to succeed in the future.

His "off" seasons, of which 12/13 was one of them, completely ruin his world class status.

I think it would be right for United and Rooney if they departed this summer.

He has been great for united, but it's time to move on now.

GL HF etc

interesting piece on rooney in today's times. essentially says that moyes and the board are willing to wait a year before making a decision on discussing a contract ext. when rooney wants to open discussions now.

he's 28 in october and has 2 yrs left on his contract. i would read this as united may be willing to let him become a free agent unless he has a blinder of a season 13/14.

looks like united could afford bale too........... if he was leaving ;)

Wait and see approach probably suits the club quite well in my opinion. In a year's time he'll probably still fetch £15m or so if they were to sell him then, and we've yet to see what Moyes' plans are for the club (formations, how he wants to use Rooney etc).

Rooney on the other hand is probably itching to get a new 5 year deal because if he doesn't have a great season then he could well be looking at a pay cut on his next move - realistically aside from the nouveau riche at PSG/Monaco nobody is going to coughing up a million a month in salary and a year down the line they will likely have already bought the big name strikers they need. Transfer request rumour is just him trying to pull the same stunt as last time, to get a new deal out of his employers but this time he doesn't have them over a barrel in terms of his diminished importance to the team.

oh dear david moyes

David Moyes claims Wayne Rooney is still needed at Manchester United - as cover for star striker Robin van Persie.

Rooney has been the focus of intense speculation regarding his United future ever since former boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the England international had handed in a transfer request in May.

But the new man at Old Trafford insists the 27-year-old forward's flexibility remains an important asset for the club and so he is reluctant to let him leave.

"Overall, my thought on Wayne is, if for any reasons we had an injury to Robin van Persie, we'll need him," said Moyes.

David Moyes
He added: "Wayne can play up on his own, he can play dropped in. It's going to be a time to see how I work with Wayne.

"Manchester United isn't about Wayne Rooney. Manchester United is about the team - the club.

"I won't allow Wayne Rooney to become more important than the football club and the football team, because that's the heart of it."

Rooney still has two years left on his deal at United and, as a result, Moyes does not feel under too much pressure to renew the contract or risk a cut-price sale.

"Maybe in a year's time we might have to look at something else," he added.

"The first year I have to get a chance to see the players and how best to use them."

Yeah, I'm sure Waynes delighted to read that he's now needed in case others are injured :D

It's moyes he only needs one isolated striker and a spare just in case he gets run into the ground by Xmas.

Those words from moyes suggest to me it's all over for Rooney at united unless he falls into line fairly fast. This could be quite the gamble by moyes, not wanting to buddy up to Rooney and make it look like fergie lied about his transfer request. Yet getting rid of Rooney and Rvp gets injured with no class replacement would be suicide if the league is lost.

Sounds to me they are trying to force Rooneys hand to make the request formally.

The actual quotes were these

However, Moyes still sees Rooney as a key figure at Old Trafford and said: "I think he's got a major role to play, because we need to get as many goals as we possibly can.

"I think Wayne can play up-top, he can play dropped in. If for any reason we had an injury to Robin (van Persie) we're going to need him and I want to be able to play the two of them.

"It's a chance for me to get Wayne right back to where he was. That's a challenge I want to take on.

"But I've also got to make sure we don't just concentrate on him. Manchester United isn't about Wayne Rooney.

"Manchester United is about the team, the club. What I won't allow is Wayne Rooney to become more important than the football club."

What I love is how those quotes were posted on SSN yesterday (or the day before) and yet today they posted them again albeit the watered down version to get everyone talking :o
