I think you would have problems playing Doom3, Quake4 or COD2 on a 9800pro.
The games will run with the detail turned down but 20fps is not good.
I used to play Farcry on my 9800pro @475 & it went ok, ironic as when playing Farcry 64bit HDR now it does not run as smooth, lol.

i think it really shows a well programed game like hl2 and cs source can still be used with this card, i used to have one and was impressed, i upgraded to a x800pro and was in 2 minds whether or not to put the £100 quid into summat else, games like fear dont have the same level of programming as hl2. bit lazy really imo.

hmm i agree that the 9800pro is a great card (got one in my main rig) but i think its days are numbered and so i will be upgrading to a 7800gs agp when it comes out. That should see me thru 2006 and then i can do a complete system overhaul in 2007. Thats the plan anyway :)

Had mine for over 2 years now (replaced my accidently broken from new AIW 9700 Pro) despite the occasional lockup I'm still pretty satisfied with it......until I upgrade (and possibly switch camps) with a 7800 GTX or more temptingly the X1900 AIW :D

HL2 is impressive (for me) on the recommended settings (I had a 9600XT Fireblade to start with)

But like many here I would agrre they look very dated now

2 years ago before leaving the UK i bought an X800PRO to replace my 9800pro crucial...pipeline mod didnt give me the 16 pipelines....bought the xfx 6800GT next day....then sold that too as i thought WTF should i spend £300 once more for a gfx as i am too busy overclocking my rig back then...so i bought 2 radeon 9800pros R360 core..kept the best clocker and sold the other one...

Ever since i am using this 9800pro flashed to XT...ok i always loved high framerates for my racing sims especially in my 191T BUT..new games such as FEAR...man...in order to get a decent framerat you have to lower your details settings.
IMO it was a big mistake i did back then selling the newer cards and buying another 9800pro...today you cant find any decent AGP cards...My graphics is my systems bottleneck...i am thinking of getting a new gfx BUT why should i spend more money on an AGP card since PCI X is the way to go....
I hope you get my POV.I stopped overclocking like a madman as i used to....cause i stopped spending my ££ in PCs...I wanna keep my rig for a few more years before upgrading again i think...something i never did so far since 1998 that i bought my first PC...i guess i am gonna wait a few more months...then get an AGP graphics card like an X850XT...hope i can find one then...its not worth spending loads for a gfx with a rig like mine

P4 Prescott D0 478
IC7 MAX3
blah blah...

Before I got my 9800 Pro a few months ago, I was using a 9500 Non-Pro. I'd had it for quite a few years... going back to my XP2200 system here and wow... I was in love with it!

It could play HL2 and Doom 3 @ 1280x1024. Bearing in mind I now have a Mobile 2500+ running at 2.5GHz and 1gb of RAM.

I sold my 9500 for £40 IIRC, and bought the 9800 for £60. Best £60 I've ever spent. I can't see why people need to have the latest and greatest spec. I've had this motherboard and CPU (well ok, I killed original motherboard and replaced the original Barton 2500+ with a mobile) since 2003 and can see it lasting me for another year.

I just upped the AA and AF on Far Cry to full and it stilll runs nice. The only thing i am missing now is a hi res. But i really dont think playing Far Cry at 1280*1024 instead of 1024*768 is going to make that much difference. It looks ace anyway!

Doom3 should run fine on a 9800pro provided you don't go overboard on the settings.

HDR in FC is very slow, that's why you are having trouble. Personally I disable it because it decimates your framerate.... you are better off simply increasing the other detail settings which don't harm framerate so much.

what was really sweet for me is that i bought the hercules 9800se aiw when overclockers had it on this week only, was a freeking steal. I unlocked the 4 unlockable pipelines and i had no side effects.

So i bought a 9800se aiw for £140 and after a simple driver installation i ended up having a 9800pro awi which at the time cost ~£300... now thats what i call bang for your buck =]

I still use a 9800Pro... Also used a 9700Pro and there is very little between the two, also had a 9500np that was fine and when modded to 9700 and then overclocked, was beating the 9700Pro... Alas they are all dead now and I just have the one 9800Pro.

Not at all impressed with the build quality of the 9800Pros ( HIS IceQ ones ) as they dotn seem to have much of a life span... The dead one has just about managed 6 months and that was a replacement for the 9700Pro which also lasted just 6 months and neither of those were clocked in any way.

Funny really as the 9700Pro and the 9500non-pro are 100% identical cards, but the 9500 had a good cooler and the 9700 had a cooler that was best suited for a 486 SX33 to be honest, but there you go!

My most recent buys have been a 6800GT and just a couple of weeks ago a 6600GT after being told that they are great for the price...

To be honest, they are not as fast as the 9800Pro, maybe they are for some games, but from what I have seen, they are not... Ended up giving it to my youngest son cos hes only stuggling on a FX5900 so thats a little bit better for him, and again, not all that much really... Not for the games he plays.

So, if anyone is still using a 9800Pro, then unless they go 6800GT or equivalent, then they are wasting their time and money.

Actually, my reason for going from the 9500np to 9700Pro was purely because UT2004 was a little jerky in places... The 9700 didnt help a single jot, and I decided to try 1GB instead of 512MB and there was the problem... Ended up going to 1GB on all my PCs and thats not a cheap task cos I have a fair few, but the end result meant that even a humble MX440 was able to play UT2K4 with 1GB of RAM better than a 9700Pro could play it with only 512MB... Ok, rez is lower but at least the game was smoother.

I have to admit though, my best gamer has the 6800GT and I still only play at 1024x768 - unless the game sets itself to anything else, like Doom3 / Quake 4 etc

I cant really see any difference with my monitors, so why bother?

I have been using a Radeon 9800/Pro since August 2003 until last week. Now I got a Radeon X850XT (PCI-Express) I am able to get a better gaming experience out of my 9 month old DELL 24".

My mate is playing through Halflife 2 on a P4-3.4GHz/9800Pro and he is telling me how great the graphics are (1280x1024).

It seems that a lot of people here are judging the 9800Pro is finished based on its performance in the latest games, but I'm sure it still is able to make a good job out of most games you can pick up in a high street store. . .

Also you must remember that HL2 was supposed to be a game that you could not play unless you had the latest and greatest, and to be honest, its playable on a Duron900 thats got an FX5200 - I got one of those and I just had to find out, and I can say that it is indeed playable, but its a shame that I could not get 320x240 working to make it less jerky, but there you are. maybe it needed more than 96MB RAM?

errr, no it was the other way round, it was designed to be playable (at lower settings) on nearly anything

hmm, just looking throught the graphics card section on this forum and u can see lots of people talkin about getting the latest cards from ati and nvidia. even if i did upgrade to pci-e there is no way that i am going to pay £500 for the latest card.

i am just concerned tho that if i get a 7800gs to replace my 9800pro then it wont even last the year with new games such as ut2007 coming out...

what u guys reckon 3500+ 1gb ram and a 7800gs agp be enough to last 2006?

yeh i still have my 9600pro in older pc. works a treat

can run doom3 at decent ish graphics 1024x768

got it when it first came out... was the bees knees

it was never the bee's knees when it came out lol. It was slower than the 9700pro and released much later. It only drew even with the 9500pro. I gave the gf my 9700pro, and it's a good heap faster than the 9600xt it replaced. Good enough to play the games she likes (CS: S mostly lol)

That's right the source engine is extremely flexible in requirements.

Hi,

I just upgraded from P4/socket478/AGP to Opteron/Socket 939/PCI-express for £470.00, thats CPU, HSF, Mobo and graphics.

9800Pro to X850XT is a great jump!

Anything over £300-00 for a vga card is plain bad value for money, the sweet spot for me is £150-£200, having said that I think I did stretch to £213 for my Sapphire Atlantis 9800 (overcocked wicked then flashed to a pro).

I think a new graphics card once a year is do-able, unless they go and change the VGA slot again grrrr!
