Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 22nd-24th

Carrick breaks up play pretty well, I think there was a stat knocking around that he makes the most interceptions in the League 2007 season though. Just because he does not slide does not mean he can not tackle.

However I'm not a huge fan of Carrick, he has bags of talent but he will never grab games from the scruff of the neck ala Keane. I'd say more importantly is a replacement for Scholes, as currently Anderson seems to have gone backwards.

That may be the case but Keane could clatter someone and pass it simple and raise the game, we could be 1-0 down and that one tackle would raise the whole team.

Meh, whatever. Couldn't care less.

You were trying to be clever and make out we wouldn't get him so you obviously do care.

The Campbell one was pretty well known and also fuel to the fire when he slithered off to the gooners. We could have had a reported £20m in the bank for him to help strengthen the squad.... but he sat out his contract instead denying us any fee and lined his fat wallet.

Agreed Gazza made a mistake. My comparison is from when we were last on a level playing field before the CL made things so unbalanced.

I honestly only ever remember Arsenal being in for him :/

I do remember rumours of Campbell possibly commanding a £20m transfer fee*, and I don't think it was Arsenal, as we weren't really involved until right near the end of his contract, but I've no idea if it was Man Utd who were involved as well. Not sure who else would have been able to afford that kind of fee at the time though.

*Ahhh, back when £20m would get you England's best central defender, not one of it's also-rans.

I vaguely remember a European club being interested but not MU.

Wiki knows everything and they say.........

In the summer of 2001 Campbell's contract expired. Mindful of the Bosman ruling, Tottenham offered him a contract which would have made him the club's highest paid player ever, but after months of negotiations and several public assurances that he would stay at Spurs, Campbell stated his wish to leave the club in order to play Champions League football. Several top European clubs expressed interest in signing him, but he joined Arsenal - Tottenham's biggest rivals.

Give over. You make it sound like United's players are all dynamic total football types who could play any position required, and the others you listed are 2-dimensional and immobile.

Roy Keane played almost the exact same role for you as Palacios does for Tottenham.

Fletcher can play RB, RM & CM, Hargreaves can play RB, RM & CM, Anderson came to us as a CM/AM who openly said his favoured position was actually LB, we've also played him LW so yeah our players are fairly versatile

As for Keane see my previous post he only became as one dimensional during his last couple of seasons before that he was box to box, Palacios is not a box to box midfielder
