Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 3-5

rumours are that he could be on the bench for the Utd game - although given the 2 - 3 weeks from now til then, its possible he could start (if necessary)

I doubt we'll see him before the Carling Cup game vs Arsenal if then. Unlike other managers, when Rafa says a player is out for 2-3 weeks it's usually 4 weeks. When he signed we were told he'd be out for 4-8 weeks, that was nearly 9 weeks ago.

@ jakeke: I don't agree and there's no point going around in cirlces so we'll leave it at that.

Rafa has undoubtedly done well in the last five years - its not an easy league to begin with , however much money you have available to spend.

just a few things to think about

1) the 1st title is always the hardest - no one in the team or close to the team have ever won the EPL (maybe senior management / advisors, I honestly have no idea but no one in daily contact with the team)

2) the final few % is all thats missing (in one sense this is the hardest part to actually know about) - thats all it was last year that meant Liverpool lost and Utd won, its not just squad depth although this is a large part of it, its real belief in everyone which Im not sure Liverpool have (Im sure Reina has already written Liverpool off this season allthough it could be reporters doing their usual carp) - but imo this kind of thing cant even be voiced / hinted at until the season's over.

3) In his first three years Benitez got to the CL final twice (cant remember how close you where in the middle year...2006?), but since then you have slightly fallen away in Europe to continue challanging at home - maybe just a coincidence I dont know

4) on a good day his tactics are 2nd to none, other times they are similar to SAF choosing the team to play Sunderland (shambolic), but with their relative EPL experience its gotta be fair that Rafa can afford this (a lot) less than SAF

At least during the first few years Liverpool consistantly won major prizes, but they seem to have had a bit of a lean spell during 2007 - 2009, as a whole is the club actually getting worse?

Not by me, I have never been for them. Frankly I detest foreign "investors" in premier league clubs. They always arrive with the same claims "oh..I/We are long time fans of english football" , "<insert club name here> have long been close to my heart and are a great name in football with a great pedigree/history"

And so on and so on...

You see a person/group take over at a club time and time again and I reckon 4 out of 5 times they say one of those phrases or very similar.

Ellis Short didn't. He just annoyed Roy Keane and has kept his trap shut since :D

Wonder what will happen with Sir King Alex, seems like this "unfit to ref" is not being swept under the carpet.

It won't be swept under the carpet, but they also won't do anything useful about it. They will give Fergie a touchline ban + fine, and not doing anything whatsoever about the useless referee.

Same as always.

Wasn't sure where to put this but good news for United fans. both Rafael and Obertan played for the reserves tonight :) Seems like Obertan played really well, would be nice to have another attacking option.

Was it reserves or "Senior Cup"? Either way glad to hear it, I heard Fabio was meant to be playing also, will be good to get both the brothers back into the squad and see how Obertan is (I guess he needs to bulk up some for the EPL, he looked kinda wirey the only decent photo Ive seen of him)

edit not going to mention another member of the club who has been injured for agesssss who sounds as if training is going well at Carrington which is great to hear....

Obertan's build will be fine as long as he is fit, look at Giggs, very slender frame but seems to do ok :P

Looking good at the moment for Man Utd, most of the injury guys are almost back and god knows we needs VDS back in goal!

Tosic isnt that different either ( ok Ive just found out from the BBC he is 15 cm shorter than Obertan, and 9 shorter than Giggs) but they look roughly the same kind of build, and SAF doenst believe - according to reports - that Tosic is bulky enough

Giggs grew into the game when a different style was being played and he was able to adapt (incredibly well) - bit different from starting off right now imo , even Ronaldo had to bulk up considerably compared to when he arrived
