Weekend Football Thread. *spoilers* 3-5

You are being dim. Reportedly we were told by Barry's agent that O'Neil had told Barry he would be allowed to leave the previous summer after turning down Pompey (?) to give Villa 1 more season and a figure of £10m was mentioned. We wanted considerably more for Alonso and even after it turned out that Barry was going to cost more, it still wasn't more than what we wanted for Alonso.

Another thing that people fail to realise is that any possible Alonso sale was ruled out well before the Barry deal fell through. Benitez wanted Barry regardless of Alonso leaving (because he was English for our CL squad and because of his versatility) and he wanted to sign him before Keane or anybody else. Had Alonso gone it would have been to fund another position not Barry.

Yeah, me being dim.
Barry *was* going to come regardless, and Alosno's money would have gone on strengthening elsewhere (Y).

Thanks for that Baz.

So you do understand why no matter what his situation was like at Liverpool, it's incredibly likely that he'd have wanted to go anyway?

And yes RAWK is a Liverpool forum. It's full of Mancs and kids that come up with rubbish like Aqua Man.

Yeah, I said that.
Real are a massive club, esp for a Spaniard, so whatever the offer was he would have wanted to go.

Never been on RAWK, it's mentioned on RedCafe quite a lot.

I thought of Aqua man on my own! :p

edit: and some news on Aquilani. Benitez has said that he's recovering well and that he could be back in the next 2-3 weeks.

Will be nice to see him play, and hopefully stay fit.

He's not replacement for Alonso though, but should give you another option in the middle.

Looks like there's more trouble ahead for Rafa and Liverpool. Gillett has blamed all of the clubs failings (including the lack of transfer budget) solely on Rafa. We've lost 2 games in a row and are on a low so he comes out and sticks the knife in. Don't think I've ever hated two people as much as him and Hicks

How is the "lack" of a transfer budget Rafa's fault?

He can raise some funds by selling players, but he should be given money to spend, which is Hicks and Gillett's problem?

Always puts a smile on my face when Liverpool are struggling :)

Great team but you simply lack depth and that's the solo reason why you'll be lucky to win even one cup this year.

All imo, ofc :D

Maybe Rafa got him to leak that info?! Managers are always trying to create a siege mentality at clubs as most players are stupid enough to believe it.

The slimely little **** has also proven himself to be an even bigger **** too. In an interview with SOS a few months back he claimed that the 'shovel in the ground in the next 60 days' was something totally made up by the press, this time he's blamed it on Hicks.

Hicks is a ****, a fat **** at that but Gillett's a far bigger ****, he's a weasely ****er. I hope the stories about him getting egged at the Hull game were true!

Not actually a bad idea....

They've been under pressure by the fans and even the banks to sell for some time now, it won't make any difference. They're hanging on for as long as they can to try and get the best possible price for the club.

It looks like the fat **** won't be able to hang on for too much longer though; he can't afford the repayments on the loans secured against the Texas Rangers and is being forced to sell them, and even if he does sell them, it will be for less than the debt on the side. Unfortunately the weasely **** made a big profit on the sale of his Ice Hockey side, the only good thing is that he's always been more inclined to sell than Hicks has.

Haven't they given Rafa stupid amounts of money yet the Liverpool fans still think they're the devil and Rafa is amazing even though it's clear to everybody besides L'pool fans that he's not that good

Yea. I'm still struggling to work out how, despite him being not that good, he's managed to finish above Arsenal in 3 out of 5 seasons (as well as win more trophies) even though he was how many points behind when he took over? As well as massively close to gap on Utd and Chelsea.

I guess he's just been lucky.

To think that they were seen as being a great asset to the club when they arrived.

Not by me, I have never been for them. Frankly I detest foreign "investors" in premier league clubs. They always arrive with the same claims "oh..I/We are long time fans of english football" , "<insert club name here> have long been close to my heart and are a great name in football with a great pedigree/history"

And so on and so on...

You see a person/group take over at a club time and time again and I reckon 4 out of 5 times they say one of those phrases or very similar.

Money!? He's only once come close to the Prem which is the real test for managers in 5 years which isn't very good at all, hope you're not suggesting that he's better than Wenger lol

But he's not good at buying players though, so you say anyway, so how's that helped?

He's taken over a side that was 30+ points off the top of the table, which was rapidly going backwards, then lost 1 part of the 2 man team which we were meant to be, been outspent by Chelsea and Utd prior to Ronaldo leaving but has managed to close the gap on them, overtaken Arsenal and made us 1 of 4 sides that have consistently challenged for the CL over the last 5 seasons (Chelsea, Utd and Barca being the others). I'm not suggesting anything, I'm just baffled by how he's done it considering he's such a bad manager.
drunkenmaster?

Can't be, I've got him on ignore. It did make me double check though.
edit: I just had to view his post below and he even thinks so too :D

WAs I drunk and hacked your account?

Essentially, this is exactly how I read it. Entitlement, you got rich owners and ASSUMED you'd spend like Chelsea, because they wouldn't buy 300million pounds worth of players they all turned on them instantly. Its sickening to be honest.

You've spent more than the vast majority of clubs in the premierleague, THEY'VE paid more for players than the vast majority of clubs in the premierleague, yet you act like they've stolen all your money, robbed your granny and forced Rafa to waste all the money on crap players. Boo hoo, he was forced Keane, to which Rafa, like the petulant child he was refused to give him a realistic chance. It felt like, I didn't want him here, watch me misuse him just to spite you, from Rafa.

Keane, obviously playing horribly at the moment with Spurs.......

Seriously, I just want to know from a Liverpool fan calmly and concisely why them investing their own money to buy players, isn't enough for you? How is that a "bad" thing.

Didn't we go through the whole thing of whose spent more than who, and really worked out that Utd and Liverpool have spent, well, ignoring the ins and outs this year, previously, and incredibly similar amount overall. So please oh entitled Liverpool fans, did I miss the made public contracts they signed ensuring a certain level of investment in the squad? Did I miss the promise on TV to spend every penny they had on the team so they are breaking that promise?

I still can't see anything they've done wrong.

I'm fairly sure if you redid all those numbers of in's and out's, that UTd would how have in total of spent and recieved for transfers in and out, spent a lot less than Liverpool now, maybe unfair because of Ronaldo's ridiculous fee, but Rafa has got some great value sales aswell to pad his numbers in the past, not least Alonso's fee. So has he not outspent the champions and still not won the league?

Ahh I dunno, maybe I just refuse to warm to him due to his idea of football being so far away from mine.

Football is about money, Benitez has spent a lot of money and look at the team he's ended up with, not one that really corresponds with what he's spent I think you'll agree (besides Torres and Gerrard)

Rafa is a joke... why are people saying he has done better than Arsenal, closed the gap on Chelsea etc...

What did they win last season?

Where did they finish at the end of the season?

Thats what matters, the league was Liverpool's to lose last season and they did because Rafa cannot handle it.
