What on earth was Ronaldo doing

Keeping goal??

Deserved the yellow for sheer unadulterated stupidity.

First one's still a booking imo, he's had to kick through SWP's foot to get the ball which is a foul and once it's a foul it has to be a booking because SWP was away. The handball's a strange one though; after the rule they've shown on 'the last word' then it's only a booking if he's tried to gain an advantage which it doesn't look like he has but im not sure how Webb can determine that though. No doubt Ronaldo's reaction to the first yellow's made Webb's decision easier though.

Away to where? He's in his own half, with Ferdinand covering on the half way line. Debatable free kick, never a booking.

Running away from Ronaldo and starting an attack. Once a foul is given in that sort of scenario it's a yellow every time. Just like Carrick's yellow.

Carrick's was a deliberate attempt to stop him though, it was a professional foul, in his own half, Ronaldo's was a legitimate attempt for the ball well within the other half. They're not comparable.

When i first saw Ronaldo's it looked deliberate too but like you say he made an attempt for the ball and it's down to opinion whether it was even a foul or not as he did get some of the ball. However Carrick's and Ronaldo's challenges are comparable though as they both stopped City from attacking regardless of intent or not and from Webb's angle it more than likely looked like he just deliberately tripped SWP.

That sort of challenge results in a yellow 9 time out of 10 and was a given today considering how fussy Webb was being but imo Webb could justify all 6 Utd bookings 'by the letter of the law' even if he could have let a couple go. Today Webb took a hard line on most things but he wasn't that bad.

Lol RVP sooooooo far offside. How can the linesman miss that??

Edit: having watched the replay, it's not even like he edged offside just before the ball was played, either, he was stood several feet offside, right in the centre of the pitch, for about five seconds before the ball was played. How that was missed I will never know.

Despite what people say i still think United having to play the other top 5 teams all at home in the next half of the season compared with chelsea having to play them all away is a pretty good advantage.

It's a slight advantage but Chelsea's form is better away from home than at home, they've also got a 5 point start on you too. But it'll be a good battle for 2nd place ;)

Just a few things about chelsea; i thought they played ok but were missing their important players; imo carvalho is a far superior defender than terry, he is the real rock in the chelsea defence. carvalho really makes terrys life easier and when he doesnt play, chelsea and terry seem to struggle. Just a quick question to the chelsea fans; where does lamapard go during the big games?? I dont follow chelsea every week, but i never see him making an impression on a game. There is no doubting his ability but more often than not i never know where he is in a game. He always scores and does it against the lower teams in the league, but in top of the table clashes he goes missing every single time. Am i talking rubbish or do chelsea fans agree?

Hahah reminds me once when i was in a footy tournament...a guy headed the ball and me standing on one goal post for a corner inaverdantly put my hand out and did a cracking reaction save...i wasn't the keeper though :( haha.

Na i can't agree with that mate. He did score the goal in the Champions league final afterall. though as a Chelsea fan maybe i should just forget about that.

I was gonna say, other than the CL final (that is the only game i remember - a deflected goal at that!! :p). But i just want to know from people who see chelsea week in week out, does he really show up in the big matches?? I only ever see the sky games and in those he doesnt seem to impose himself very much, not like he does against the lower teams where he walks over them.

rafaels card was a joke. he got the ball in the first place then just flicked the ball up for the free kick. Ive seen players give the ball for free- kicks like that every weekend

Ronaldo got the ball on his first supposed yellow and clearly gained no advantage with the handball. In fact he could have easily headed that into the goal.

I watched the game again on MOTD, I am a united fan but the first one was a yellow card, it was a tackle from behind and he got the man, even if he did get the ball you see those get booked week in week out.

Second one, i don't know how can you argue it was not a yellow card, he handled the ball on purpose with his arms. Yes, he could've headed into the goal, but he didn't, he could've did a somersault kick into the top corner, but he didn't, he did handled it without being under pressure or fouled. Yes, its a strange one but he handled it on purpose, it wasn't an accident.

No one can't blame the ref for the 2 yellows, certainly not for the handball.

It was clearly an accident as he didnt try and seek an advantage from playing with his hands (it was clearly handled straight downwards where no player was), he didnt push the ball towards another player or the goal, I think it was a booking more to do with the clapping after the first booking

Accident implies unintended, at which point did you think, "oh, he didn't mean to put both his hands up and parry the ball to the ground?" Directions is irrelevant, the ref blew when he handled the ball, not looked where the ball had been if the team got an advantage then blow whistle.

If it was a booking that to do with the clapping then he should be counting his lucky stars he had 30 more minutes on the pitch than he would've had. People get sent off for the clapping thing and he got away with it.
