Well I fell down the custom keyboard world.

Bit the bullet and ordered a Cycle 7. Got pulled in by all the glowing YT reviews..
Just had a look at it, the layout looks really interesting. I've been using a 60% for so long now that I've forgotten how useful arrow keys are - but that layout looks really nice. Gasket mounting too - and the price seems great!

I don't need it... I don't need it...

Same, it just seems really interesting in terms of layout. That and coupled with all the features such as the ball catch closure system, the gasket mount, finishes available etc.. when compared to the price, it just felt 'worth it'.

Gone for 'Void Elf' purple with a PC plate.

Same here too, went with Jasper, Gunmetal weight and aluminium plate. Also ordered GMK Wasabi to go on it....

Oh and I ordered a Neo65 too. At least the boards are group buys and less likely my wife will remember them arriving as they'll likely come at different times.... That's my plan anyway as there is no logical, grown up reason for me to buy these darned things.

Build her one. My wife loves ASMR so I built her a wooden cased board with some hand lubed switches and some cat-themed keycaps. Sounds super creamy, and now when new keyboards and parts arrive she just laughs. :D

It's a hobby like any other....

She has my Keychron K8 Pro which was the first board I bought that threw me down this hole. She says it's really good so I've tried to tempt her to try one of the others I have but she's not really that interested...

With my Astrophotography and Land Rovers she would argue, quite rightly, that I have enough hobbies already. I wouldn't win the argument, but at least I recognise and accept that fact :-)

1970s vibe.

I bought my son an Epomaker GK75, but the RGB software is an absolute killer. He's not happy lol, so can anyone recommend a board with better customisation options? Are Duckys any good or does he need to stick to Corsair icue if he wants all the fancy lighting patterns?

Anything that supports (or can be flashed with) QMK?

The wired Keychron Qs and Ks do I think?

When you say customization are we purely talking about lighting effects or other customization such as layers, actual keyboard mods etc?

Also what is the kind of budget we are talking here?

Beginner budget! Lighting effects along with keycap mods mainly. Budget about £150 max.

If you want something with a bit more modability then keychron would by my choice (if you are looking for a pre-built) then go for something like a K2 Pro (assuming 75% is the form factor you are after)

If you want something with all the bells and whistles as a pre-built and has been regarded well for a pre-build the new Razer Blackwidow V4 75% would also be a valid contender but just outside the budget.

But at £150 you are getting close to looking at something in the "premium" budget range of customs such as the TKD Cycle7 (would be my pick of the premium budget boards on offer right now), Zoom75, QK75 etc. (but these you then have to factor in switches, keycaps and in some cases stabilizers.

Thanks, appreciate the input, that TKD does look very nice!

For the money it is criminal. I would seriously consider it as an option when extras arrive now that the Group Buy has finished. But again you do have to then factor in all the other parts which may push up your budget. TKD are planning next to do a TKL and then after that a 65% from memory.
