Western Digital Rant

I sent back a Veloci that developed a board fault after a few tries of them trying to help. Got the replacement drive after 7 days via the advanced RMA. Just received an email (3 weeks since I got it) saying the RMA is closed. So im happy.

Well I got an email today from WD saying the RMA is now being processed.

Got another email saying the replacement has been despatched. From what I hear replacements from WD are bit of a lottery (refurbs, newer models, bigger drives etc)

Can anyone confirm this?

First 150GB raptor died about 2 weeks ago, 2nd two days later - typing from my machine with the 2 replacements in :)

Both my drives say 'Recertified' and are the exact same model as I RMA'd apart from the firmware which is rev 5 (mine was rev 1).

Great, ive to rma a raptor drive and this thread isn't filling me with much confidence.

Do we actually have to include that weird customs decleration on the front of the box? And just how anal are they about packaging the drive, ive got a box here with foam padding that will secure the drive in place but they seem adamant about wanting 2 inches of bubble wrap around it.

to be fair im thinking about using my raptor as a paper weight with how long rmas taking phoned em up the tech guys escilated my rma now i just want a new hdd not fussed what it is i just really need the hdd back to recover some cost of the replacement drive

received an advanced RMA drive from WD this morning, took them 3 days to send the drive out - my experience was pretty good i have to say.

Had a similar experience with WD too. I was also returning a 150Gb 10k Raptor.

It took about two weeks for them to receive it (or at least acknowledge it - by email). However their web tracker still said it had not arrived. Apparently the place they receive the drive is different to where they're fixed / replaced. I had to wait another 2 weeks or so for it to get shipped internally to that department and finally appear on the website as received. It then approximately took another couple of weeks to get fixed and around a week to arrive after being shipped. Overall the whole process took around 7 weeks, during which time I had no boot drive for my main PC. Really disappointing.

Compare that to Logitech who responded to my RMA request the same day and shipped me a replacement mouse before requesting I send my old one back and it's two completely different worlds.

It took a month to process my dead raptor. So I bought a velociraptor and flogged the replacement refurbished drive when it eventually arrived.

Very poor RMA process, but decent drives. Makes you consider your purchase though!
