What am i "missing" about ipods?

Totally disagree - the iPod as a source compared to other brands (iRiver, Cowon and Sony to name a few) just arent in the same league regards sound quality and replacing the earphones will usually just maintain that distance rather than substantially reduce it...

If i'm honest, I've only had 3 Mp3 players. The Sony W910i Walkman phone, Ipod Nano and a crappy Generic thing. I used the same inear headphones between the Sony ericsson and the Ipod Nano and didnt notice much difference. But Im sure the difference must be substantial then when comparing those 2 devices to the likes of the iRiver and MP3 player specific Sony products.

Indeed, as I just said above. Don't see why anyone who posts here, most with half a clue about tech would want one though. That's what really puzzles me.

Its all down to personal opinion though...

I do love my techy stuff. In fact my job is a Technician and I really enjoy it. But just because of so doesn't mean I have to exclude products that might do a job better or make it more simple.

My reason for owning an iphone, it saves me the hassle of having to have a phone, a camera, a laptop and a music player when I am on the move. I can just have my iphone and it will browse the internet, connect to wifi, allow me to listen to music and eve take some pictures if I really want to.

I'm not saying its any better but its convenient. As we all know in this world convenience is a HUGE seller.
Look at KFC, McDonalds, Burger King they are not better than home cooked food but they still sell and have a huge market. (crappy comparison but I'm sure you get the idea)

Plenty of mobiles on the market that will do this so that cannot be your sole reason ;)

Until the 3G the iPhone was sub-par for connectivity.

I'd say that the only people that notice differences in the quality of iPods sound are audiophiles. To be honest, an iPod is an ideal present for the wife. They look nice, they feel nice to use and they'll sound nice to her as well. Who cares if it's not as good as some other MP3 player in regards to sound quality that his wife probably won't even recognise? They are hardly tinny or distorted.

I'm sure your wife will love it. :)
Just imagine its a cheaper version of some branded handbag and youll be thankful its 'only' an iPod...

@wannabedamned - sorry, just realised how rude I appeared in my reply to you...

It's one of the best MP3 players on the market (even though such popularity causes the usual public revolt) and not everyone cares for the highest of specs or finest of audio quality. Even the latter can sometimes exist in people's imaginations.

i'd like you to justify this statement with anything other than:

  • They're easy to use. many other, much much cheaper MP3 players are just as easy.
  • they integrate with iTunes. iTunes is a horrendous amalgamation of atrocious programming decisions, and involves considerably more faff than the age-old, "Drag & Drop"
  • They're well built. i have several friends who used to work in electronics retail stores and all of them say that iPods are the items most often returned as faulty.

I know what you're saying, perhaps I demand more from such an expensive product. I'd rather have separate things that do each WELL, rather than being a jack of all trades but master of none.

I also hate junk food for the record. If anyone catches me surfing the net on an iphone in mcdonalds, you have permission to end my life in whatever way you see fit.

One word: convenience ;)

All my music is stored and organised in itunes. Why change what I am used to. The UI is simple and I am used to it. :)

I can't get on the iPod's scroll wheel for some reason. Also I don't understand how interface is much of a plus point. Once you get used to any interface it's easy to use and you can navigate through it quickly. I find my iRiver Clix2 to have a much better interface than the many iPod's I've used, plus the buttons are much better than the scroll wheel. I despise iTunes though, drag and drop is so much better. If you have your music organised (/music/artist/album directory) then nothing can beat the simplicity of dragging and dropping albums onto your mp3 player.

I strongly disagree. But I'm a rubbish cook. :p

Reason why I have an iphone, for day-to-day its more than adequate (though I use it far more as an internet-enabled device), when Im on holiday though all those other devices unsurprisingly find their way into my luggage.

I used to have a 60gb iPod video, then got a 80GB iPod Video, then got a 8GB iPod Nano 3rd Gen.

The nano is such a great device, take it everywhere.

Reason? Size, ease of use and battery life.

Dont think there are any other mp3 players that small and sleek, and easy to use.

I did buy some cx300 earphones, as the apple ones do suck :p

Mine is an 8gb Nano, older square shape which plays movies, with some ex top-end Sony ear plugs. It's pretty, it's easy to use, it doesn't do lots of other stuff I'll never use and, most importantly, it completely blocks the scum general public out from my commute :D

I guess if I had a phone that had this functionality integrated then I might go that route, but a whole contract for an iPhone rolls in at about £720 and I can't justify that sort of money. Other mp3 players I've tried just aren't as easy to use and the interface isn't as nice. I'm no iTunes fanboy but you can't argue against it for the way it handles music on and off the iPod. I use WMP to play music, CDburnerXP to encode, mp3tag to tag it and iTunes to manage the iPod.

I know what your on about its just I can see why people also want an ipod/iphone. Everyone has their own opinion on the matter after all :)

I personally hate fast food so you certainly will not catch me doing that it was just an off the top example I could think of.

My job is a jack of all trades, maybe thats why the iphone suits me ;)

hehe :D

There are lots of better products about, Apple just have better marketing.

this is exactly it

I can't tell you how many people coming in asking for an ipod when they mean mp3 player.

It's similar to Tomtom, people refer to satnavs as Tomtoms, and many believe that's the name of the technology. because these companies have done such a fantastic marketing job and have become so popular, there's very little else they need do at the moment, sales are guaranteed

Has several ipods (and other music players) and just find ipods far better then the rest.

Plus I find itunes very good :)

But it's cool to hate Apple.

I've had an ipod ever since the first 5 gig one (which I loved), tended to always keep to the classic ones. Whoever said the ipod headphones are good has obviously never put anything decent in his ear - spend a bit on some quality headphones and the sound quality improves tenfold, in fact I can no longer even try listening to music on those white **** things....urgh.

I have also owned an Iriver the old 20gig version, it was lovely but it broke. None of my ipods have ever broke, only the batteries have died. Ipods are good at what they do, accept it.

iRiver Clix2. Probably smaller than a Nano but still looks nice. Plus it has a great quality AMOLED screen (though this is quite irrelevant since it's only 2 inches) and fantastic sound quality. There's lots of different themes for the interface and other user content too.

Its like when people go to a shop and ask for a Hoover. When they clearly mean a Vacuum cleaner :p ;)
