What am i "missing" about ipods?

You can sub define into Playlists / Genres / Favorite Items / Play Counts / Search the libary / Groupings etc etc, quite a few options to narrow down the long list, then you have the Genius which picks similar tracks to the one you have on iirc.

Can you make a folder-esque structure with /artist/album? If not then it's useless to me.

As usual, somebody mentions an Apple product and a horde of people jump in to say how shocking Apple's products are and that they are all about looks with everything else coming second.

We must all be wrong then. Not everyone is saying they're shocking, just there's better stuff out there.

Also, I don't know what features people are asking for that aren't included on an iPod seeing as there's apparently a lack of them...

Which there should be for how much they cost. For audiophiles there still aren't enough non-gimmicky features that matter though.

There are a few more options too. The sound quality is fine, I'm not listening to it and thinking 'well this is ****', sure, the first party earphones aren't the greatest but Apple are hardly going to put earphones that are worth £70 or £80 in something that only costs £115 in the first place. If you think the sound is that terrible (which it isn't) then just buy your own choice of headphones. For me though, I'm not an audio snob and the included earphones do their job fine for me. I've a pair of Philips headphones that offer a bit more bass but it's nothing I can't live without.

Sound is fine, but again, there's better for less money. You could even spend what's left on headphones as they're important.

I don't see what the deal is with people here jumping on the crApple bandwagon. Apple products work fine for the majority and if you're some kind of audio freak then you are obviously going to make an informed decision based on your needs. An iPod isn't designed to be the absolute best of the best when it comes to sound quality, but what it does offer is a well rounded and fairly cheap package with great build quality, very good software and good integration with iTunes, especially on a Mac.

There's no jumping on badwagons here, we're allowed to have an informed opinion on the products. I disagree with them being cheap, great build quality and good software. They're expensive, die all to soon, batteries never last long and aren't replaceable, easily scratched in a lot of cases etc. Itunes is an absolute pig too. It makes what should be as easy as drag and drop much more difficult and bug-prone, as well as having adverts for the store and little flexibility in playback options. It also insists on running a few services in the background on the PC which are unnecessary. Looks swish though.

Zune software is rubbish and the actual Zune is hard to use. (From A Zune 120 user).

The DAC inside the Zune is very good though. Everything else ignored I do love the sound quality when hooked up to my Audio Technica ESW9 headphones.

I don't see how the software is rubbish? You point it to a directory, it puts all your music accross... simple as anything and works perfectly.

How is it hard to use? Don't honestly get that at all, you flick through tracks just as you do on any MP3 player?

Zune 120 user here too.

I refuse to buy into any of the Apple guff, and besides my Sony 8GB Walkman (NWZ-A818) is a far better product. Both aesthetically and in the sound quality it produces.

You can arrange them by artist or albums. You can have it setup in a "folder" type manner in which it will have a box with the album art that you can click on which will take you into that "folder" which will then have the tracks.

Ofc they are not external folders as they are all still in itunes. I personally just click on the search and type in whatever the hell I want to listen to and there ya go a nice list of that artist or album..

It sounds like you've had a bad experience with them or have read too many horror stories then Alex. I have had a second generation Nano go through a washing machine and still work when it came out. The battery wouldn't hold a charge for long but it works fine as a memory stick. I've clumsily dropped my 4th Gen Nano a few times onto concrete from about 6 feet up and that still works perfectly fine despite having a dent in the back of it.

I do agree with you that there are better audio players on the market, there's absolutely no doubt about that.

I'm still interested to hear about what other features an audio player can possibly have that Apple haven't included? I mean, the iPod touch even has the capability to download apps and browse the Internet.

I don't know how much cheaper you could go while still finding a product that has the same build quality as an iPod.

I don't think you can go wrong with an ipod. They are really easy to setup and use.

I have a classic and a shuffle, shuffle is great for running and the classic is great just to whack everything on it and go.

That isn't too bad then. I'll still stick to foobar though. (this isn't mine but it's similar)

As far as I can tell, the only genuine thing going for the iPod is the UI. Fair play to Apple though, as that's obviously the major factor that the general public care about.

I bought my iRiver H120 over 5 years ago now, and I don't think I've ever seen an iPod last that long.

Absolutely hate iTunes and the way it copies music requiring a third party tool to copy them back to your hard-drive. I much prefer the drag and drop of the creative devices (I still have an old 30GB Zen which does exactly what it says I also find the sound quality much better than my Mrs's iPod)

Not an Apple fan by any stretch of the imagination. And to the person who said it's cool to hate Apple... well I'm not trying to be cool.

I like using the built-in iPod feature on my iPhone as I only have to carry one device, it was a big factor for me as I have enough crap in my pockets.

The only thing you're missing is that excessive marketing has worked.

TV Adverts, high street adverts, website adverts, youtube adverts etc.

it's probably the most marketed gadget since it became popular (was it 5-6 years ago?).

I'd show her something thats equally good but cheaper or better and the same price.

I've convinced most of my friends to buy cowon/samsung players ever since they heard the sound quality from my S9.

one friend really wanted an iPod, couldn't be conviced, bought one and had to convert 400 albums from MP3 to AAC :D.

I have never really been a fan of the iPod. There have always been better, cheaper, more flexible alternatives on the market. Then I got a touch, which is frankly brilliant. So I got a touch for my wife for valentines day, and now she loves it too. The previous iPods I could take or leave, the touch is however is hard to beat.
