What are you playing on your Instrument now?

Oh the first arpeggio SidewinderINC is mentioning is from the film Crossroads (no not the Britney spears film :D) and is where Steve Vai's character 'duels' with this lad.

The piece is on his CD 'The Elusive Light and Sound Vol 1' and is called 'Eugene's Trick Bag'.

aww yeh! crossroads...

i was going o learn that bit about 2year ago... but i forgot.. and now ive been reminded again. lol

i remember seeing a lad do it (when i did music) and it sounded class

Ive just played on the guitar:

Metallica - Battery
Slipknot - Opium of the People
Sum 41 - Yesterday.com
Saliva - Always

And im in the middle of learning Metallica - Dyers Eve

well i was up til about 2:30am practicing sweep picking...

i found this good video on youtube...marc seal... giving a beginner guide to it... it might not be high rate but its got me off to a flyer.

i;ve now got myself in a nice zone where i can sweep downwards... ill practice some sweeping up tonight. i've clicked again :p... trust me i wont stop practicing sweeping until i know it sounds good.

its what im like

but at the moment its a very n00bish sounding sweep, makes you feel great when you are picking something up.

if anyone wants to take a peek (tutorial)

Yeah i've seen that video before, it's got a good few examples of arpeggios to use, I'd really suggest practising sweeping down and up though at the same time, if you only practise going down you may find it akward just learning examples where you're sweeping upwards. Just take the same shape and use it for down and up.

That video's alright but he's not really the cleanest sweeper iirc :p

Check out Guitar Techniques this month for some sweep picking arpeggio stuff, it's pretty good but not really what you'd want to begin with.

The basic major/minor 5 string arpeggios are very good to start off with, and like its been said before once you get the timing down your speed will increase and all the sudden everything will click.

EDIT: Oh and I've been playing Judas Priests - You've got another thing coming. It was in Prey (game) and then found it on my vice city soundtrack so that was pretty much the last thing I played. :)

I`m trying to learn lots of stuff, but i dont really have a focus to my playing (which is probably a bad way to learn). When i practice i usually try the following:

simpsons theme :)
that canon rock thing - though still cant play sweep style (?) - my fingers just cant move that damn fast!
vai- for the love of god - started learning last night after i gave up learning a few years ago (it was too hard :( ) - probably my favourite vai track...

slightly OT - but does anyone know any good books for learning the more advanced techniques? Ive looked at some books in music shops but most of the book seems to cover basics (ie hammer-ons...etc) and i wondering if there was anything that was well written (with lots of exercises) and took it further.

edit- that video is quite good, will try that tonight :D

Speed mechanics for lead guitar, troy stetina, is a good one if you want to get into the shredding style of lead guitar. Lots of repetetive passages and some sweep picking exercises to get your co-ordination up to speed. It's pretty good if you want to pick it up up for maybe an hour every so often to get your technique going, but after a while - though useful - it does become a bit tedious.

It does have an excellent tab of the flight of the bumble bee in it though...

Any particular reason for cranking up the tempo, it's already pretty zippy in the recorded version? Just for the challenge?

Yes - my soloing falls apart in it when I get above about 300bpm, and I'm trying to get to a higher standard in my jazz playing at the moment. I played it at the Jazz Cafe in London a few years back, and wasn't that pleased with my performance :)

Well, to deviate from Andelusion's plethora of theory lessons, and in answer to the question in the OP about what we're all playing, I'm playing nothing. No guitar, very little keyboarding (about 5 mins in a good week). I haven't touched my guitars in almost three weeks, I'm too scared to (due to tendonitis, I hasten to add; my guitars themselves are in no way scary).

I'm feeling pretty disillusioned about my playing anyway atm, so it's probably for the best. And as for sweeping...don't do it, it sounds horrible. :(
