What are you saving up for?

It dawned on me recently that I'm saving like a man with a plan, but I've no idea what for. I know there are things I want in life like a house of my own (who doesn't?), but nothing I want, including a house, seems like it's ever going to be financially viable.

I feel like I'm limiting my lifestyle hugely for some impossible dream whilst everyone else has the cars, the holidays etc. I suppose I'm saving for the hope that one day I'll do the math and something amazing happens.

Short or long term, what are you saving up for?

I've got £24k in the bank, a £1500 car and turned down money from my dad to buy a house so have chosen to live on the streets.

I'm saving to buy myself a cardboard box and a blanket.

That, or a black cab so I can spout racist tripe at people and get a pat on the back from GD.

I'm in the process of buying a new build house with my partner, so I'm saving to actually have some possessions (Seeing as I currently live in a bedroom) for said house :p

House, should be moving out at some point mid next year. Big chunks of money have been going in to savings for that, slowly clearing up some finances.

It's been hard as there have been so many expensive things I have wanted to buy.

Stoicism my friend. You need to learn to find happiness in things that's not a money furnace.

I'm saving for many things, but it can all be whittled down to 'Options'. That's what I'm saving for. I know I'll have my house paid off by the time I'm 39. The maths have been done. Even with a 50% pay cut (which simply won't happen) the same rings true. Even with a life-changing accident, rendering me unable to work, it still rings true. More true really as it'll be instantly cleared.

But for me it goes beyond merely ticking the 'mortgage cleared' box. I feel that allows me options going forward. Changing careers, going back to university (for the 3rd time ) or simply taking a few years off and travelling.

Or if I decide to quit working today and take 3-4 years off to travel and rent my place out, that's also perfectly viable. Financially stupid perhaps, but still financially viable.

Quite a few options available to me, made possible by saving what I can without depriving myself of anything I truly enjoy.

Keep at it but ensure you have goals and passions in mind.

Just out of nothing but curiosity, what sort of expensive things?

My first house, could have bought one last year but I've been refused a mortgage 3 times due to poor credit and they keep telling me come back with a bigger deposit.

A Sony 70-200 f4 lens for £1.2k....if I can wait and save a bit more I'll get the 70-200 2.8 gmaster lens at £2.5k.

That's all I want for now.

Saving to buy my first house... But this is going to take a while (I live in the South... House prices are ridiculous :( :p).

I've also just had 2 pints of old man beer and am unsure of whether I can drive to collect the takeaway as I don't want to tell them my "address", "Its the errrrr red Corsa with Chavvy black alloys at the end of the street maaaate".......
