What book are you reading...

I eventually gave in on the Ben A books after initially really enjoying them. I heard he is a script/episode writer for various tv shows and by the end I felt his books read like overlong, drawn out episodes of a sitcom but I had to wait 2 years for each episode as opposed to a week.

That sounds pretty harsh but I actually like his writing style, I just found his books far to slow and by the last two, uninteresting.

I'm trying the Vorkosigan Saga at the moment in my seemingly unending quest to find a series to read. I think it's myself more than the books I've been reading this year but I just haven't been able to really get into anything. I've found the deep stuff too much of a time/brain commitment (busy at work with 2 kids doesn't help! :p) and the pulp stuff just doesn't grip me, I've mainly read graphic novels this year. It's got so bad as an avid Erikson fan after buying fall of the light on day one it's still sat untouched on my bedside table.

That's a shame, I know how you feel though, I still can't motivate myself to finish Dust of Dreams, I know what's going to happen too so that doesn't help :(. Which sucks because I want to move on to the Crippled God and finally finish this series haha

I've just finished the Divergent trilogy. First two books were pretty good. The third one though... what a slog that was. I found it initially strange that the viewpoint narrative went to both the main protagonists as opposed to just Tris. I had to keep thinking which characters' perspective I was reading from. With Game of Thrones it didn't bother me as that's how it's written from the beginning. All in all, a very dissapointing finish to a series that I actually quite enjoyed.

Was having trouble finding a new book to read, so looked through some of the books that I have here and found Running with Demons, by Terry Brooks. Don't know when I got the book but there it was, along with Angel Fire East. Not sure why I would only have 2 parts of the Trilogy either. Anyway, I read the first one, loved it, purchased the second one and loved that too. And now I am reading Angel Fire East. Great book so far. A change from his Shannara books.

I am considering reading The Last Dark by Stephen Donaldson next, but, my God, Against All Endings nearly killed me. So much whining, so much "oh why me, I am not the right person" And too much, I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do, and then do something either amazing or completely off the wall. Then there is the huge cast of super power characters that are there for no purpose, and no attempt to explain them. The other big annoyance is that most of the time they stumble from one area to another with no idea and then whatever dilemma they are in is solved by one of the super powered characters. Which is followed by pages and pages of Angst and introspection, mainly by Linden.

Currently reading Skiing with Demons: The Morzine Chalet Project by Chris Tomlinson.

A Christmas treat to myself and it arrived a few days ago, highly amusing with a number of laugh out load moments from me so far.

Needless to say I'm very much enjoying it, highly recommended.

Last week on my holiday I managed to finish off book 11 in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, Crossroad of Twilight, and I finished "The Night Circus" by Erin Morgonstern I think her name was. I did really like The Night Circus even though it is not a style I tend to read. But it was really good.

Now I'm attempting to finish off The City of Mirrors by Justin Cronin, the last book in a trilogy that I got started on when the first book came.

Next I will either read Murakami's "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" or Dune, or book 11 in The Wheel of Time.

Half a King - Joe Abercrombie

Quite enjoyable so far, enjoyed his last trilogy so hoping this one stays the pace throughout.

You'll have to let me know what you think :) I've read the First Law trilogy and the 3 stand alone books that follow and enjoyed all six of them. Be interested to hear if these are worth reading as well. So much to read at the moment!!

Currently on the fifth book of Bernard Cornwell's saxon stories Burning Land. Still enjoying the series.

For anyone that hasn't seen it there are a few good deals on kindle versions of Mistborn and First Law as well as a few others in Amazon's 12 days sale. Worth checking out ;)

Finished it, really enjoyed it, as you can tell by the fact I hardly put it down since Boxing Day! I've just ordered the next one from Amazon.

Just starting Invictus by Simon Scarrow, have really enjoyed the Macro and Cato books so far. Bernard Cornwell is on the list after these.

The "Half" series is a step back for Abercrombie but maybe I'm biased because I tend to dislike young adult books.

I've read the first book and half of the second, they are not bad at all, the writing is good, the story is decent, interesting but I couldn't shake the feeling that Abercrombie is trying to expand his readership rather than tell a honest tale. :D

I thought the same - I didn't much like the first installment, but the second and third books were a substantial improvement. But then, this trilogy was aimed at "young adults" so I passed it off as a series not being specifically aimed at me.

Just finished reading Nomad by James Swallow, a decent enough thriller. Started the latest Mitch Rapp book yesterday, only read a couple of chapters but seems like a quite typical Mitch Rapp book.

Nearly finished The Gypsy Morph, book 3 of the Genesis of Shannara. Great series, the best Shannara books that I have read in a long time.

just finished The dark forrest which is part 2 of the three body poblem, one more in the series, loving it so far.

Now on to How to Make a Spaceship: A Band of Renegades, an Epic Race and the Birth of Private Space Flight

which again is fantastic, and will lead to further reading if i can find anything good o the subject, especially the first non stop flight around the world.

Just finished Waterloo by Bernard Cornwell. Fantastic factual book about the battle of Waterloo. I love his writing style in his fiction books, and was happy to see that same style but written as a factual book. Had me gripped from start to finish, and now I understand what happened on those days in 1815 when I've never really had any interest previously.

Last few books are pretty awful. What started off as a great premise and series of books just went on too long in the end. I just read them to get it finished. :)

Nearly finished with 'Ghost in the wires', about the hacking escapades of Kevin Mitnick in the 80's and 90's in America, while being tracked and under investigation by the FBI and others.

Absolutely fascinating. Can anyone recommend anything similar?

Not too difficult, they have sucked for a long long time. :p

haha true!! The Heritage of Shannara was the last series that I remember. The rest are so bad that I don't remember the names of the books or the storylines, nothing.

I haven't even finished Against all Endings. I don't think I can even do what you did and struggle through them :( I loved the Land and the Haruchai and the way magic worked, the White Gold etc. The new books destroyed all that. I am not sure I will ever finish them. First time for me not finishing a book.
