What book are you reading...

Bloody Rothfuss. I am about 2/3rds of the way through the second kingkiller book and I need the third damnit. I did the same thing with Asoiaf thinking that the years it would take me to read them would give GRR Martin time to finish the next one.

Need to stick to authors that actually finish their series. I think that some authors just get too rich/distracted to commit to things they lose interest in. Its fair enough but god damn its annoying.

Yeah I never start any series until it is finished now.

Charles Stross has written some interesting things on his blog about multi-book series, and many don't get finished just because unless you have a big hit on your hands, any second book pretty much cuts sales in half. It's just not financially viable to keep writing a series when the sales get cut in half for each book unless it starts at a best-seller level.

I don't think Martin and Rothfuss have any financial worries. I could see why some series are curtailed though, but most established serial muti-book fantasy authors have no trouble finshing series off.

I agree. And I suspect that this is why many books that are the beginning of series/trilogies etc never actually state the fact. They leave you to buy the book and realise on page 300 that's there's no way this can finish by the end of this volume. Arkady Matine's "A Memory Called Empire" just has a little "1" on the spine and no other clue. To be fair, it's pretty much self-contained in that case. But it's rarely that obvious. Except you can usually assume that any new fantasy is book 1 of at least a trilogy ("In Fantasy...all stories must run to three volumes and include a mention of the Wild Hunt").

Only author I start unfinished series for is Sanderson because he's actually an author who you can rely on.

Almost finished Snuff, two discworld to go!
For me, it's Joe Abercrombie. I can rely on Mark Lawrence and John Gwynne, too.

Just finished reading Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams as part of read-a-long on Discord. Like many others in the group I'd put off reading this series for years - literally. For me it was a solid 3/5 ; didn't live up to the hype. I don't think "traditional" fantasy is a good fit for me any more. If I had read this in my teens / early 20's before I had digested too many similar tales I think I would have enjoyed it more. Next on the list is to finish the Expanse series ( Book 6 onwards ) and then I will tackle either Fonda Lee's Jade series or Babel by R.F Kuang.

I'm sat on a range all week, so I'm planning to read Ready Player Two

I absolutely loved Ready Player One (Book and Film) but having read other people's thoughts/reviews on this book I'm not expecting much.

Just finished re-reading The Obelisk Gate, second in the Broken Earth trilogy by N K Jemisin.

The only sci-fi/fantasy that has captured me outside Ian M Banks....it's an incredible trilogy, really hope the film/TV adaptations see the light of day, although they'd need a pretty serious budget to do properly.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

I am sticking with it as it gets really good reviews and people say it starts rather slowly (which it certainly does). Fingers crossed it turns into something more.

I'm the other end, not long ago started a complete Discworld re-read. Just finished Equal Rites which has some truly cutting puns. Now started Mort, might need to pick up the later books in paperback because starting at City Watch I have them all in hardback only. I think I may only be four 1st editions short of the entire main Discworld series, plainly haven't got Colour of Magic.
