What book are you reading...

Got Deadhouse Gates on order.

Been reading a fair few books recently. Completely finished the Dark Tower series, as well as The Stand and Eyes of the Dragon to read more on Randall Flagg.

This past week I've been introduced to Robin Hobb, and been thoroughly engrossed in the Farseer (Assassin) trilogy. In the last quarter of Assassins Quest now. Really, really enjoied every minute of it, and I think I'll be getting some more books by Hobb.

Deadhouse Gates is one of the best fantasy books ever written, you're a lucky man to be getting into that series.

Deadhouse gates is brilliant.

My advice with Hobb is that the Assassin books are by a long margin her best work. I would class the Liveship stuff as worth reading but the Soldier Son book I read was terrible (hence not reading the others) as is the first book of the Rain Wild trilogy in which nothing happens.

For myself I've recently finished the Hydrogen Sonata and thought it was a great addition to the Culture series. I do wonder where he is going to take it from here. The afterlife was covered (sort of) in Surface Detail and now with the most recent book dealing with Subliming, I would expect another Excession style Outside Context Problem.

Personally I would like a followup to The Algebraist to make an appearance at some point.

I would love more Culture stuff exploring the intricacies of the culture of the Culture :p

I find it fascinating reading more about how things go day to day and how it all works.

WHAT! Since when was Sonata released!??! Time to feverishly check my bank balance! Was in WHSmiths today and saw no new Banks books

Hardback only currently, as is his latest mainstream book AFAIK ( can't remember the name of the latter).

As for Hobb, I liked the Soldier Son books, not least because Hobb is one of the very few fantasy writers doing anything original, but I can see why others might not like them. I like the small scale of her books, and the concentration on people.

I'm now reading Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn books. Currently about 200 pages into book two. Not that impressed. The story is pretty unoriginal (check out this list and he ticks any number of boxes), but most of the weaknesses stem from his lack of writing experience. The idea of swapping character viewpoints is fine, but he is very haphazard about how he does it. Characterisation is weak, and the lead character is a cliché on legs (see number four on the list). I find myself continuing out of a sense of started-so-I'll-finish rather than actual enjoyment. The best amusements come from odd details: one person holds the rank of "Hand of the King" and another is wandering around with a helmet shaped like a snarling dog. To be clear though, this was written before ASoIaF and I believe Martin is a fan.

Carl sagan - contact

In December, 1999, a multinational team journeys out to the stars, to the most awesome encounter in human history. Who -- or what -- is out there?
In Cosmos, Carl Sagan explained the universe. In Contact, he predicts its future -- and our own.

Almost finished, will be finished by home time. So much better than the film and some really good thinking/philosophy stuff in it.

Do you like horror?

How about these:

Fluke - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fluke-James-Herbert/dp/0330522590 (not horror but an amazing read)

Have you read any of The Dark Tower books?

Just started Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson. Read the first chapter just before dinner, will read for an hour or two when I go to bed in a little while. As I know little to nothing about the Hell's Angels it's going to be a pretty good read for me. I've also liked the style of writing and quotation inserts so far.

Just finished I Am Legend. Quite a short book and quite different from the movie, a nice little read.

Read that in one day (short book like you say) but I agree it is a good read and very different from the movie.

I'm currently reading the second book in The Survivalist series by Gerry Ahern on my Kindle. Read them all many years ago and am quite enjoying reading them again :)

Finally getting round to reading The Road To Woodbury from the Walking Dead series.

EDIT: Erm my bad, Rise of The Governor!

Yeah, I got through the first two parts of his Otherland books and found them a real slog. And absolutely the biggest problem was flimsy characters and someone writing about things well outside their sphere of understanding.

Currently reading So Long and Thanks for all the Fish (HHGTTG Book 4) - definitely read it before but do not remember it anywhere near as much as the first two books and the first half of book 3.

Thanks, not sure on horror, gunslinger looks worthy of a try though.

Yes its not that big a book either, but yea defo worth a read i'm sure you will be hooked into reading all the other six books straight after like me :)

I have read the Rise of the Governor (most of it anyway) and really liked it, need to finish it and start reading the others too.

Have you read the comics? Even better than the tv series imo and the tv series only loosely follows the comics.
Comics are sooo much darker too.

Well, just finished Robin Hobb's Liveship trilogy, and I have to say I enjoyed it. Really nice to see hints back to events in the Six Duchies, as well as revisiting certain locations. Quite nice to see the nautical themes of the book to be so prominent, she did a good job. Is The Tawny Man any good, or does all of her writing tail off at this point?
