What book are you reading...

Need some recommendations for a new fantasy series. However, nothing with magic, dragons and fairies. I'm more into historical fiction set in Greece/Rome etc.

I've just reread David Gemmell's Troy series for the 4th time and if I can find any series that's half as good, I'll be happy.

So, any recommendations?

Conn Igguldsen or Bernard Cornwell if you're after historical fiction.

How long do people give a book before you give up? Or. Do you just carry on.
Not liking Mindstar Rising by Peter F Hamilton, halfway through the third chapter. It's crapy sci-fy version with some crap sex scenes.

This might sound really stupid, but generally, if a book hasn't grabbed me by the first chapter / two chapters it's put on the back burner for another day.

I will quickly move on to something that grabs my attention much quicker. I do this only really for fiction books.

Till the end of the Kindle sample which is about 10 pages...?

The Big Short - Michael Lewis

Excellent. I read the first ten pages last night, and from 11am to 11pm today I read the remainder of the book - having eaten three meals whilst reading it, and am still in my pyjamas.

It's an account of why the banks and the financial system collapsed back in 2008 - told from the perspective of three hedge funds whom profited from the collapse, but also several fortunate and unfortunate individuals caught up in the whole thing.

Really interesting, written with a bit more focus and maturity than Liars Poker. Also, this is the first account I've read about the markets that took place during a time in which I covered the financial markets from a professional standpoint - I even placed CDO Structurers at the banks!

Think I may pick up his book Boomerang tomorrow, and read it on the long journey to Carlisle and back :)

Song of Ice and Fire book 5 part 1 : Dreams and Dust.
Took ages to read as i was bored with it .
Started part 2 : After the feast and this is totally different , cant put this one down.

Reading Daylight War, third book by Peter V Brett.

Couple hundred pages in and enjoying it so far.

Finished Firewall, another Wallander book. Really good as usual.

Currently at chapter 3 in Tai Pan by James Clavell, really enjoying it so far, on par with Shogun.
I did start book 1 in the Malazan series, but put it down after chapter 2, does it get better? as i want to go back to it.
I hate quiting a book thats not finished.

I'm almost finished with 'The King of Plagues' by Jonathan Maberry.
3rd in the Joe Ledger series behind Patient Zero and The Dragon Factory. Rather predictable stories but I enjoy a bit of escapism.

Just polished off The Passage by Justin Cronin. A bit of a slog half way through, but really picks up pace after that. Thoroughly enjoyed, couldn't really put it down once the middle bit was done n dusted.

Onto the 2nd in the Trilogy now
