My top 4 (why 4? because they are the ones which stand out) would be:

7900GTO, Mod/OC/Silence/Value/Performance - Has everything
Second 6800LE for being a true 6800Ultra beater (Quake 4 was yummy)
9500Pro for 90% of the performance of the 9700Pro at half the price (Great until CS:S)
GF3 for seeing me through CS until 1.6

What has been your history or favourite video card that had the elusive X-Factor?

correction: your 9500pro had half the performance of the 9700pro;)

anyway.

s3 virge dx2
nVidia gf2 mx 400
Nvidia gf4 mx
Ati r9500np 128bit (lasted about half a second before it caught fire :o)
Ati r9500np 256bit, softmodded (faster than your 9500pro ;))
Ati 9700pro with artic cooler
Ati x800gto2, again softmodded
Ati x300 onboard :s

Really, I'm suprise at that as I was very dissappointed going from that to a 9800Pro. The 9500Pro was BIOS unlocked, flashed, OC'ed and Arctic Silencer :D

You couldn't unlock the 9500 PRO, only the regular 9500 with L-shaped memory which then became a 9700. :)

Geforce 4 - was onboard my msi board - wounderful card considering :) didnt clock - at all
ati radeon 9200 - brilliant - payyed £30 for it and palyed battlefield 1942 @ 1024*768 on pretty nice settings - best buy ever
ati radeon x700 - even better, payed £100 for it and was the bees knees - couldnt beat it - played battlefield 2 on this for a while on pretty reasonable settings
geforce 7600GT - not bad for only £100 played bf2 on high settings - clocks okay - never really pushed it however.

1993 Cirrus logic onboard 512K on my 386, couldnt do 256 colours, i dont think windows 3.0 supported it...

1993 some unknown onboard crud on my 486 sx 33, i think it was cirrus logic 512K.

1994 Cirrus logic 1mb ISA graphics card under win95 with 486sx 33, 256 colours in all its glory, DooM never looked so good. <--- first ISA card here

1995 Trident 2mb under win95 with 486dx 33 very long. it was a 1mb but i pinched the chips off the cirrus and plonked them in the trident. finally got wrid of the judder in DooM 2. <--- jump to Vesa Local Bus made here

1996 TeSeng Labs, Vesa Local Bus Graphics card!, HUUUUGE card, 2mb faster interface than ISA, on my dx 33.

1997 4mb s3Trio on my newly cobbled together dx2 66 now with PCI!!! Quake = mmmmmm orgasms, still jerky though.

1997 4mb s3virge on the same system

1998 added a maxi 3d gamer 4mb card to it (poor mans orchid righteous 3D accelerator) which i picked up for £40, installed and proceeded to play a game that was only equalled in pleasure by aforementioned orgasms... UNREAL still very jerky due to cpu and 32mb ram though.

1999 RivaTnT 2 PCI, my first fully integrated 32mb 3D card, £60 notes well spent, plonked it into my newly cobbled together AMD K6 400mhz with 256mb ram! fantastic! :D that was the year of StarTrek Armada. <-- jump to AGP made here

2000 geforce 2MX400 32mb PCI not sure why i swapped, i dont think it was that much more powerful than the TnT.

2001 Geforce 4 MX440 64mb £39, one of the best cards ive had, did its job very well

2002 Geforce 4Ti 4400 the performance on this was astonishing, i picked it up for £40 from an auction site, it was my first true power card.

2003 Radeon 9600pro £115, owned it for about a week, signed up to here, you all told me i should have gotten the 9800pro, so i sold it for £110

2003 Radeon 9800pro,£180 truly one of my favourite cards of all time, i simply loved it, its still going strong in a friends PC right now :) i bought BGA ramsinks and an Arctic cooler for it.

2005 6800NU 128mb, £80 from MM, didnt overclock well, only unlocked vertex shaders, terrible performer, flogged on auction site. worst card ive ever owned.

2005 X800GTO2 £165 ah, the supposedly "limited edition card" that OCUK sold to us, only for it not to be limited edition but for it to hang around like a bad smell with 2 other types of GTO2`s later being sold that were terrible clockers. even so, the card i got was from the first batch and was capable of X850XTPE speeds! as these cards had the same core and ram as an X850XT. <---- jump to PCI-E made here

2006 X1800XT 512mb crossfire master, bought second hand of a member called welsh tom who is sadly no longer with us after he told a person to buy a part that ocuk do not stock, from his own shop. Good guy, and a good card, bought in feb 2006 for £240.

2006 7800GT, on loan. a stop gap card while mine was in RMA, a kind friend lent me it, good cards :)

2006 X1900XT FREE! my x1800XT went gah gah, ocuk lost it, i think it was last seen heading to Hungary, no ones quite sure. either way they kindly replaced it with the available matching stock, which was an X1900XT 512mb crossfire master which i will be keeping untill between march and may next year.

19 CARDS !! i win ! .... oh dear god how much money have i wasted :(

-Cirrus Logic 5446 - standard 2d card
-Guillemot Maxi Gamer Voodoo Graphics - my first 3d accelerator. Highlights were PS beating graphics in titles like Forsaken and Unreal, coupled with the speed of DOS glide
-Voodoo3-2000 AGP - Quite a nippy performer when overclocked around the 800x600 level, very good for quake3 and UT
-Hercules Geforce2 MX - rather disappointing given it's huge reputation as a 'bang4buck' card. Only 20% faster at tweaked settings than the v3 in Q3, although it did last me 20 months and let me use 32bit colour at last.
-Voodoo3-3000 PCI - swapped for the V3 above so that I could install it alongside the gf2mx. Was nice to have dual monitors for a while and also the facility to run glide games
-Abit Siluro Geforce 4 ti4200 64meg - Pretty decent performance for the price, and had a huge memory overclock
-Hercules Radeon 9800SE AIW - softmodded to 9800pro but didn't clock very well. Didn't think much of the ATI drivers, but it was quite good value at the time being around £100 cheaper than the 9800pro I believe
-XFX Geforce 6800 AGP - Again a massive overclock on the memory but performance somewhat hampered by not unlocking to 16 pipes
-Leadtek 6800GT PCI-E - minor upgrade made necessary by a move to the NF4U-D mobo. Still got this sat on the shelf and should really try and sell it while it's still worth something....
-MSI 7900GTO - As usual I've got a huge overclock on the memory, seems like a pretty reasonably card which finally lets me use AA. Bought in preparation for a move to TFT and hence needing a bit more grunt to ensure games are playable in 1680x1050 native resolution.
