Update:

After a few messages back and forth from Intel I got this message:

"Thank you for the swift response! We can provide you with a replacement under warranty. If you wish to proceed please send us the following:"

This is great news :)

nice organise a return asap, dont wait :)

So bad news.

Intel have told me (after running the serial no. Through their system) that my CPU was part of a "loan programme"? Whatever that means?

Basically, it doesn't have the standard warranty and they cannot help me further. Which leaves me fuming, because I bought the CPU brand new, unopened from a private seller.

I have of course messaged the eBay seller with all information, but they have not responded and will probably not respond. I have also started a return through their system, but again, I doubt it will amount to anything...

So... I guess I have to suck it up and buy myself a replacement CPU!
The question is, should I get another 10850k? Or an 11700k? Or 10900k or 11900k etc?
I am leaning towards another 10850k

ah thats really bad luck, but thats the risk you run buying from 3rd party sellers or private sellers, with regard to which cpu to buy next if your gaming and doing a bit of streaming you may as well save some cash and opt of a 11700k, its just as good as a i9 but costs a fair bit less.

just quick too, mentioning a certain auction site is also not allowed so alter that quick :)

keep us updated :)

I think I've just had loads of really bad luck with this PC!

The reviews of the 11700k aren't good.. I really am tempted to get another 10850k! Surely mine was just a fluke and an outlier..
I really would like an i9 over an i7 too

if you really want a i9 then go for another 10850k but buy from a repitable retailer that will honor a return in the unlikley event the chip goes bad again, sometimes trying to save a bit here and there can come back to really bite you in the *** and cost you a lot more eventually, sometimes you can save money and it's all good but most times ppl are out there to fleece you, its not right by any means but it does happen :(
