What did you think when you first used / saw the internet ?

I brought a 56k modem back in 1998 and signed up with the PAYG ISP. Very first thing I did was look for a chat room. I found www.theglobe.com which was a web based JAVA based chat room and quite advanced for the time. I remember going into the chat room and talking with people from all over europe/us and saying 'this is the future'. Sadly theglobe.com has long since died.

It was like a huge social expansion and I could see the potential of the net. Back then of course the net wasn't very well known by Joe Public. Ten years later though the masses have caught up with the likes of myspace and facebook. Now though I rarely bother with chat rooms. I haven't even got a profile on myspace. Been there, seen it, done it 10 years ago.

I first used it on my Dream cast, first site i went on was alton towers :)

I remember not knowing any decent sites so bought a book which was filled up with loads of URL's from a newsagents!

I was at the Bradford Museum of Film, Photography & TV, as it was then known, probably in 1999 and there was an exhibition on about Walking with Dinosaurs, there was a sponsored section from some phone provider who were giving demonstrations. I hopped on a pc chair and they told me to search for whatever I liked, it was yahoo; I searched 'sheffield united football club' and clicked a result. They amazed me saying that there were millions of results.

Can't believe it was so late for me, I was 10. Soon after we got AOL and I hated 56k for the first 2 years I had it; googling for computer game cheats, ringtones and shockwave flash games. Spent a lot of my time with a friend in the lesbian chat room too.

Yahoo chat sticks out in the memory. :D

Also used to be facisnated by the dial up sound and the flashing lights on my Diamond SupraExpress 56e modem.

The biggest surprise was much later - fireing up Counterstrike litrally about 30 seconds after the NTL engineer had installed our 512k broadband and seeing the ping at <20.

1st time using was in juniors & thinking wow this is cool i want, that was anytime around 97 and 99. when i got net at home in roughly 2002, one of 1st things i searched for was porn (never got caught;))

According to wiki, it must have been around 1994 when I first discovered the internet, because I can remember AOL version 2 coming out. Back then it was really just AOLs own content and chat rooms, so nothing amazing. I can remember there being lots of areas you had to pay extra to access, I think shopping was one of them. I also remember that I only found an internet browser by chance when I was bored and randomly clicking links within AOL one day.

AOL chat rooms, used to love going into the Yank chat rooms for a bit of banter before being kicked off, that and pRon :D

Excatly the same here lol, apart from it was Yahoo,

Met my ex gf on there as well lol.

She was in the room next door at school rofl. Didnt even know each other at the time. Took about a week of chatting before we asked where each other was from rofl, was with her for 3 years :D was fun
