What do gamers actually think about Ray-Tracing?

See my cyberpunk screenshots to see how transformative RT especially PT is in a game when done right and you have the GPU for it.

Given that much of the game uses darkness and lighting, you do notice it quite clearly in a lot of areas, most especially indoors and on an OLED display. Indirect bounce global illumination being the major RT/PT feature here. Objects in darkness are lit accurately as opposed to playing with RT/PT off which gives weird glowing surfaces that should otherwise be in complete darkness, or light leakage through a literal wall or doorway lol.

Plus, if your character build employs a stealth netrunner play style, the you spend most of the time in the shadows anyway.

Yup, for me ray tracing is actually far more noticeable in motion than screenshots especially with reflections and lighting/shadows with how things react as you move around the environment.

It's less of an issue now for the non 4080+ cards though because you can use the DLSSG to FSR3 injection mods for nearly any modern game now and get frame gen benefits on 20/30 series cards. Ok it won't get you 100fps at 1440p with RTGI and all the other RT effects enabled in some games, but it will be close enough from what we've seen?

Call me when we've ditched raster! /s
Hopefully when we have the overhead available we can simulate some believable audio too! Audio is always taking a back seat to shiny things.

Oh god yes please, game audio effects are ruddy awful.

Though the worst game I've played for audio is the latest installment of Forza Motorsport, absolutely horrendous.

Regarding RT personally the games I've played so far and I've switched it on, I can't say I've really noticed it either way,

Cyberpunk
Forza horizon 5
Forza Motorsport
F1 23
Jedi survivor

(Others I can't quite remember now)

However RT on Minecraft, I did notice a lot of difference.

Agreed it just tanks fps on anything other than a 4080.

Playing plenty of RT games on a 3080 here with 90+ fps and that's not using FG (just dlss upscaling). Only 2 games where FPS tanks is AW 2 and CP 2077 with full PT although with dlss and frame gen, it brings the fps back to 80+ which plays nicer and better than native res and raster settings imo. For 1440P, you ideally want 7900xt/3080 level rt perf now and for 1440/4k, 4080/4090

Basically this. AW 2 and CP 2077 PT are the main punishing titles (ignoring the full RTX PT remix titles like portal, quake etc.)

Go play Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on a CRT and then have a think about RT.

If only devs. had all the time in the world like the old days to get great looking lighting and shadows........ and also if we're happy to stick with less dynamic worlds where everything is pre-baked.....

You can blame Microsoft for the state of game audio, years ago it was really good. I would like to know what it would be like if they hadn't killed hardware accelerated audio.
