What do you get from getting married?

Assuming your are only looking at material gain, although there are other ways of achieving the same end result getting married is a quicker router to all of the legal protections surrounding child custody, inheritance etc.

From an emotional point of view, it shows great commitment between two individuals.

I get a beautiful woman who I'm proud to call my wife. Enough for me*.

Realistically? Nothing tangible that a couple can't have.

*She also earns tons more than me so its a win win situation really :p.

Bit of a generalisation there, I was married after a couple of months. Seems to have lasted so far.

I proposed to my now wife after 5 months, and are still very happily married 6.25 years after we'd originally met (married for 4.25 of those)

I never thought I'd get married, neither did my wife. Proposing was one of the most impulsive things I'd ever done - and very out of character, but it was right for me, and never a day goes past with me regretting in.

Apologies if I make you feel nauseous.

Your surname for your kids.
.

You don't need to be married to give your child your surname. It gets one, either the mothers or fathers.

I have always had the dream of being married and having a family. Well having been married ten years (and in a relationship for much longer), a son, a grandson and a devoted wife. I think I'm living my dream.

However, I have a feeling the OP is 12 or something. Who goes on about getting married for tax breaks?

Regarding tax breaks: there used to one called Married Man's Allowance but they did away with it. Think it was in the 1990s when it was scrapped.

There is the benefit from co-habiting like split household bills, but I can't see any incentives nowadays from actually getting married.

There is one tax advantage: You can transfer shares to your spouse and they can use their capital gains tax allowance when selling them. Meaning effectively you can sell twice as many shares per year (assuming they made a profit). Of course only useful if one of you owns shares that are making a profit.. Oh and I personally didnt bother with a ring.
