Just wondering what everyone named their servers?

Ours are all named after european cities, we have Oslo, Rome, Madrid, Milan, Lisbon etc.

One of our clients name theirs after types of trees, another after composers.

we have so many, the UK ones are w3gbbgkNN where NN is an incremental number.

when the company was small, apparently they were all named after Star Trek characters

Country/Region/Company 3 character, basic function 3 character, sequential 3 digit. Avoid putting site, location or overly specific function into IDs at all costs due to being bitten on more than one occasion by server moves, role changes etc.

In AD anyway you can put a decent description, so we use that if we have to be more specific.

Last place of work was all types of fish, then moved on to birds and other animals.

Current place is purely functional, usually along the lines of location, function, then a number, eg BRUMFILE01 would be birmingham file server 1.

File and print servers are called after the the cities/towns in which they are located then the functional sql servers have their own functional names.

Rocks (as in the geological type) for all of our machines...plus numerous amusing names

eg our most recent workstation buy (a quad core etc etc) we named 'cerberus' and Zombie was a machine which was coaxed back into life.

The latest batch of ones being put in are named after Spongebob Squarepants characters. This was after they ran out of Flintstones characters.

The mac servers are named after the simpsons.

Deserts, Atacama, Sahara etc.

Once we'd run out of deserts, it went onto a less inspiring "drinks" theme, fanta, mocha, redbull etc.
