What do you think of supreme commander?

The exp units are good when in their preferred combat situation but given foresight its very very easy to make scrap metal of them well before they are even a threat!

One thing i think is missing is the aircraft engineer that was in TA - ok so the engs in Sup Cmdr can go out over water - but they sure as hell can't get up a mountain side to build stuff up ontop !!

I really do hope someone makes an air based engineer unit ...
tbh
use troop carriers

Well I've had a few skirmish games now and frankly it's kicking my arse and that's just on medium! :D

What build-up strategy are ppl using? Tried building T1 and T2 defences first and then building up tech level later and also going straight for T3 before building any defences - both ways I just can't get enough defences up and get overwhelmed before I can establish myself.

Performance seems ok FWIW. Running a dual-core Opteron 165 @ 2.8Ghz with a 7800GTX and 2GB of mem and it doesn't seem to slow down much even in a 4 way skirmish. Running at 1280x1024 res and screen only gets a bit jerky when there's total mayhem going on.

I tend to build up a strong T1/T2 defence before getting on with T3.
This can give me a disadvantage in the race to get Experimental support units, but by the time they come I usually have enough massed T2 units to take them out (usually a large amount of bombers)

Sheilds are always a plus, if the cybran then get the tech 2 sheild and do all 4 upgrades on it, very strong and it doesnt take long if you hire in some engineers to help. remember that if a unit passes through a sheild it can fire and wound anything its aiming at, so maybe consider putting a wall around the base just to hinder things even more, this also stops any low level units from inflicting any damage. T2 PD and AA are always a plus but SAMs right around the edge of your base is a must if you are getting that far into the game. if the SAMs are buried too deep in your base then the enemy will probably have bombed you before they kick in and take them out.

aside from that, constant AirSup patrols and spy planes to maximise the view of what is coming, AA Tanks dotted around the perimiter also help while obviosuly having any other units on hand is always a plus.

The Soul Rippers are the ones that cause me most problems, since there aren't many mobile units with strong AA firepower, and I tend not to build huge amounts of T2 AA tanks. I usually try and keep 20 or so T1 fighters ready to take them and have them patrolling around my base to take out enemy bombers too.

t3 AA sam site take them down quick enough...

What i'd really like to see is some AI routines to ease the load on the player, I think some "toggle" functions for Commander/Engineers especially such as "Repair mode" where they automatically go about repairing nearby units and structures without you having to order them to. That way you could dedicate 2 or 3 engineers to making sure your base was healthy without having to constantly divert your attention away from more important things.

Order them to patrol.. they repair units/structures then, and they will reclaim any resources (trees/dead units/rocks) if you are low on energy/mass...

any X unit that comes near my base without backup is getting turned into a great big boost to my economy lol.

How do you mean by that? Is that by reclaiming its wreckage? Does it give you a lot back?

im crap at rts's, but this is brilliant, loving the game. TA all over again for me.

The only prob i got with it is the camera moving verticaly/horrizontaly speed seems really high! and their isnt an option to lower it. anyone else find this aswel?

once you are at a stage where you have an economy strong enough to make X units its not a great boost. but every little helps :)

Granted, but I prefer to take out experimentals before they get anywhere near my base!

Build 20 sam's on each side of your base with a shield over the lot, and it will be dead before the shield even goes down...

But surely that tatic only works on certain X units? not all of them especially the land X units ?

lol not played online yet, just working through the campaign on easy peasy and then going to replay on hard. once i am happy that i have some kind of intelligence i can open up to gpgnet lol. i just view my base as a solid start so i like to look after it. i tihnk its called turtling or something but i have no idea, had the interweb for years now and i think the only game i ever played online was CS, CS:S, Mir and Eve online. aside from that i was always happy to play solo. Need to play supCom online though i tihnk just to get the best from it.

Get and play online, don't bother with playing Campaign on hard. You will learn more in 1 match against another human than you will in hundreds of AI matchs.
Predictability is what its all about!

Open the console in game (either apostrophe or colon) and type ui_keyboardpanspeed [number]. The default is 90 iirc and lower means slower pan.

Coordinated attack never works for me.

If I sent a bunch of units to attack.
hold shift on a group of other units and do as it says 'double right click for coordinated attack'.

Group 2 just goes and attacks way ahead of the original group.
:(

Yeah, we were talking about rippers, it'll work well on the flying t4's, but they are rather weak to an air attack of a few well placed strategic bombers with a bunch of spy planes as flakk...
