what do you usually have for tea?

No fine dining for me but like to make as much fresh as i can.

I make my own soup from real stock, lentil, split pea, minestrone, broccoli also freeze some of the soup

I make my own bread, can't beat it and lasts about a week stored only in bread bin, also freeze some.

Lots of potatoes, tatties and mince, tatties and stew, spag bol with homemade sauce, tuna with spagetti and salad, chilli con, meatballs with homemade sauce, chicken, pork - loads of veg, brussels, broccoli , cauliflower with cheese sauce are all good, salad with potatoes, apple, cheese, ham, sweetcorn, beetroot, lettuce etc etc.

Homemade chips and haddock and runner beans!

Savings are pretty good, can make 15ltr of excellent soup for about £5 whereas 15ltr of tinned soup would be about £30-35.

Bread saves a bit too.

I don't go to the lengths some people here do, (due to laziness mostly), but it doesn't take much to whip up a stir-fry or make some chilli or do something with pasta.

I do know some people are the same as you ... in their case it's a lack of confidence that they'll be able to make something and not poison themselves.

Expect to make some things which you don't like, or go completely wrong, from time to time (so make sure you have a microwave curry in the freezer for those times when the only thing you can do is bin what you've made ... although I've only had to do that once ... )

Even if you buy the chicken 2 for £5 from Asda - you can mix and match and each pack has 2 servings in it. E.g. we sometimes get:

Chicken and white wine sauce and chicken and bbq sauce = £5 for mon and tues dinners

Stick in some chips/potatoes and veg on boil and job done food ready in < 30mins.

Even that is better than chicken kiev!!! :p

A simple pasta sauce goes a long way. From scratch from my Nans recipe, none of this jar junk:) Have it as pasta, bake, with chips and cheese, jacket potatoes.

Jonny69's curry recipe is awesome too and very versatile.

Usually have pasta and chicken, chilli, spagbol, curry or shepards pie or mince and gravy with mash and veg. I do find that I tend to have the same meals every week though and it gets boring.

I very rarely have chips at home as ive never found any frozen chips that don't taste bland.

At precisely 4:10pm tea should be served. Dependent on season/weather I'd say a nice fresh green tea (oolong for instance). Possibly a Darjeeling.

With this should be served, scones, jam and clotted cream. Also small sandwiches (crust off): cucumber, smoked salmon and ham are the usual three variants. A couple of small cakes as well should round off the tea spread.

Delightful!

However, I have read the thread and believe that they don't have Tea above the M25 and refer to this as we would supper or dinner.

It depends on what you like really.
Buy a big bag of pasta and a big bag of rice.
Buy chicken
Buy some fish
Assorted veg.
Curry paste (if you are pushed for time or lazy etc).
Herbs and spices

You can do just about anything with that.

For instance:

Monday: Thai Chicken Curry with rice and veg
Tuesday: Chicken fajita (throw spices and herbs on, squeeze lime over and rub it in then whack it on a high heat grill pan and 5 min later you're sorted) with veg eg peppers.
Wednesday: Grilled Salmon with veg and salad (add whatever flavours you like! I tend to go for a honey and soy sauce glaze on mine)
Thursday: Special Rice (Assorted veg like peas, corn, pak choi broccoli etc with prawns and a piece of leftover salmon/chicken)
Friday: Butternut Squash Risotto with pancetta and vension sausage. Takes less than an hour from shop to mouth. I can post a technique for this later if anyone wants. It's dead easy.
Saturday: Grilled Chicken with leftover risotto and salad
Sunday: Pasta of whatever flavour you want. Maybe Carbonara this week. Maybe crayfish next. Gnocchi ragu etc. The list is massive.

That's an example week's worth of dinner. I tend to have a carb based dinner once or maximum twice per week. I tend to have risotto once per week. Most other nights it's chicken-based or fish based. If I can afford it I'll also have steak once.

Make your own chips, fill a wok 3/4 with sunflower oil, heat the oil for 6mins, peel about 4 good quality potatoes, chop them and stick them in the oil for about 12min. Duke of york or kerrs pinks are good for chips.

OP's meals sound like what I used to eat when I was 7 and was a really fussy eater.

I have this sort of thing maybe once a week now at best which involves chucking in oven and waiting 30 minutes to get food, but the quality and taste just really puts me off now. I used to have chips most nights as a kid and now I can only stomach them once a week max (unless chippy or fast food but that's even rarer).

How fussy an eater are you OP? Do you eat that way because you don't like other stuff or because it is THAT easy? Things like bolognase, pasta bake, chicken fajitas, salad meal + flavored meat, sheppards pie etc are all almost just as easy and they are a damn sight better for you than oven crap!

chicken & beansprout stir fry with veg
chilli
spag bol
fajitas
steak & chips
lamb chops
fish & something
tuna pasta mayo
tuna pasta bake
corned beef hash
...

All these take about 10-15 minutes

or something like braising steak left in the slow cooker all day with veg & potatoes

If im lazy or hungover I might get a kfc

Spagbol takes a lot longer than 15mins imo.

An hour is the shortest I'd take. I like to have it slowly going for about two hours.
Ideally slow cook for a couple of hours then leave it in the fridge overnight for added flavour.

Hell, if it's time and ease then:

1 Pack of Filled Pasta of your preference.
2 Boiling water for 2-4mins
3 drain and stir in knob of butter and pour on some single cream
4 add parmesan
5 eat

If this takes you longer than ten minutes to prepare then there's something wrong with you. This is possibly the laziest meal I can think of.

it's because it's easy. by the time i get back from work i'm shattered and don't have time to prepare anything. it's not food i was raised on and i'm in good shape but i am missing out on the home prepared meals i got when i was living at home because they were cooked by my mum!

Short of making the pasta, sauce and cooking utensils all from scratch how is that possible? :)

Do you just like to let it simmer/cook for a long time?

My Mrs usually makes a big batch of home made sauce on a weekend and freezes it into portions so we can usually defrost it and pan cook it in 10 minutes. The meat for the bolognase takes about 10 minutes to cook and 5 with the sauce added. Maybe garlic bread takes 15mins in the oven.

Short of making the pasta sauce (which could be negated by buying a jar of dolmio by the OP) it's not a long/difficult one to do!

So its the lazy option then? I sympathize with you in which case. Can't be good for you eating that oven ready type food all the time though. A friend of mine often makes a huge batch of home made chicken curry/bolognase/etc on the weekend and saves it into 5 portions and then literally reheats it from frozen throughout the week.

He is a single bachelor type guy and personally I'd get bored eating the same thing every night but for quick, easy and healthy that is an idea!

Some of the ideas in this thread might take 10 minutes more but you'd get a lot more out of it!
