What film did you watch last night?

Spiderman: No Way Home - 8½/10

Very good. Having such a poor memory, I probably don't appreciate it as much as some, with all the blasts from the past in this one, but a good movie, none the less.

For some reason I have an issue with things like 'everyone will forget PP'. Really? How can that even work? What about all the news articles? The social media posts? I know it's in a world where someone clicked their fingers and half the people vanished. I get it's fantasy, I just struggle when it's so casual around something that would be next to impossible.
if everyone forgets who PP is or that he ever existed will mean that there were no social media posts and no news articles written. The spell goes all through time erasing PP from it.

Turning Red

Disney/Pixar film that is just kinda meh, I'm clearly not the target demo, but it still felt a bit over the place. Decent graphics, as to be expected.

5/10

The Adam Project

I actually quite enjoyed this for what is it, and the kid didn't annoy the living crap out of me like they normally do. Funny how 4 of the adult leads have all been in Marvel movies.

6/10

I enjoyed Shang Chi, it's a bit more refreshing for Marvel, couple of cringy bits, but Eternals was just awful.
I'm glad it wasn't just me that had that feeling!

I think that's what turned me off - It was just the Marvel recipe. A bit like an Aldi Marvel recipe but with M&S actors.

Enemy - A solid 8/10 - A man spots his exact double in a movie and becomes obsessed with finding him.

I knew very little about this apart from it was one of Denis Villeneuve earlier movies and that it's quite divisive. I understand why and will admit to immediately watching some YT breakdowns of the film immediately afterwards to confirm or dismiss my thoughts. I was generally on the right track.

I can't say much without giving a lot away but think it's quite the masterpiece, a little raw and rough around the edges but unsure if thats intentional, i'm more accustomed to DV from Prisoners/Sicario onwards.

Watched this again last night (18 months since initial viewing) as missus hadn't seen it, would now rate as 7/10 on a rewatch but still a great movie.

Also had to show her an explainer afterwards as she took it on face value entirely.

King Richard. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9620288/

I quite like Will Smith and since I have a reasonable interest in tennis, I was fairly keen to check this out.

It didn't disappoint, was well worth seeing and passed the time away very nicely.

The King. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7984766/

Love a bit of medieval drama.

Robert Pattinson was very good in this though he didn't have an especially substantial role in it.

Spider-Man: No Way Home 9.5/10

Spider-man was the first comic I read as a kid and the first marvel hero I used to draw on a regular basis so I have a little bit of a soft spot for our friendly neighbourhood web slinger.

Have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. I came to it not having a clue of the story etc which is the way I prefer to watch any film; I loathe trailers and avoid them like the plague, which is part of the reason that I have to dock this the 0.5. Instead of the normal couple short teasers for the next movie, this time they put a full length trailer at the very end!

We were Soldiers; 1/10
There’s a couple of hours I won’t get back, just my opinion but absolutely dire.
Mel Gibson as Lt. Col. Hal Moore was as convincing as Warwick Davis playing Jack Reacher.
Sam Elliott played Sam Elliott as he always does, very well, a good actor.
Aside from that, forget it.

The Phantom of the Open (2021) - 9/10

An enjoyable, funny and heartwarming true story about giving your all and not giving up.

The characters are charming and well-acted, even if their portrayal is a bit of a caricature and the drama is emotional and relatable.

The setting and style makes for easy watching, although I wasn’t really a fan of the psychedelic dream sequences and I highly recommend it, even if golf isn’t your cup of tee.

The Marksman - 3/10

Predictable Liam Neeson latter day production line tosh. Irish actor playing (bankrupt) New Mexico farmer whose land happens to share the border with Mexico. Enter mother and child on run from the cartel (cartoon cut out Latin bad guys) which then leads to an hour and a half semi road movie as farmer undertakes to transport said child to distant relatives in Chicago.

Massive plot holes and improbabilities everywhere from corrupt police and border patrol, to why was Neeson's protagonist's daughter in a well paid job with said Border Patrol but didn't help keep the bank at bay, to the whole ending which fizzled out with no resolution to the various issues the lead character was facing previously and as a result of what he did during the course of the movie. Despite the title, the focus is not on gunplay in fact a bit of a misnomer. It's the sort of movie Kevin Costner or Arnie might have done 30 years ago but with more panache and humour.

Taken it isn't.
