What film did you watch last night?

After (re)watching Back To The Future last week, I caught up with the other 2 this week.

Part II (1989) - 7/10
Part III (1990) - 9/10

I saw the first 2 as a kid in the early 90s, not sure which years, but I definitely saw part III in December 2001 when I was 23. Memory is pretty sketchy on all 3. I just remembered enjoying part III the most first time round, and the verdict stays the same this week in my 40s. All-in-all, I enjoyed all 3 of them more so this time round.

Part II was about timelines, how 1985 got messed up due to someone from 2015 travelling back to alter events leading up to 1985. There were some rather goofy predictions of 2015, but some of them were spot on! In a taxi, the passenger made a contactless payment. One scene had biometrics in the form of fingerprint scanning. There was also a video call which was quite faithful to Skype or Zoom. The film was also semi-correct with wearable tech, although not implemented in the same way. Fax machines were on their way out by 2015, but my work (NHS) still used them in 2015. Hoverboards were way off the mark, even though I enjoyed the hoverboard chase like I did with the skateboard chase in the first film. The laser display with Jaws popping out of the cinema is probably real now, as it reminds me of laser displays of the late Keith Flint seen in Prodigy concerts.

Part III was nearly entirely in the old West and is still my favourite because of this. I liked the costumes especially at the dance and seeing the clock building being built that would feature in all 3 films. Plenty of gun-slinging action and bully/gang rivalry which was a nod to the 1st film. I didn't expect the film to end how it ended because I have forgotten how it ended, but was nice to see that the Doc had fashioned a new time machine. So you get to see him again along with his good lady. The hoverboard cameo in the train heist climax was a nice touch :-)

50 Shades of Grey (2015)

What a load of ****. It's like pretending to be something that it's not.

Saying that the girl is quite hot, although she was much better in The Peanut Butter Falcon, which is a significantly better movie.

You forgot Nike air mags!

A 10/10 trilogy in my eyes, also in my 40s :p

Captain America at the cinema. 5/10. Fantastic special effects and lots of action, but the story was rubbish and Harrison Ford was like a plank of wood

Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, top cast and just a great film really. Made 60 years ago!

Inside Out (2015) by Pixar.

I haven't really watched many Pixar films since the Toy Story and The Incredibles era but having watched Inside Out, it has given me the desire to work my way through the back catalogue. Inside Out really is up their with Pixar's early films. Very well constructed, full of character, and inventiveness. And a real tear jerker too.

I've now watch Inside Out 2 (2024), too.

It had big shoes to fill and I think fell a bit short. It's still a very good film, that I enjoyed a great deal but it's just that the first film was so good... perhaps I did it a bit of a disservice watching it whilst I was still thinking a lot about the first one.

Another Pixar movie... Soul (2020). Another impressively crafted, inventive, funny, and sometimes touching film but personally, it didn't resonate with me in the same way that Inside Out did. My theory is that it is because Soul's basic premiss... it's "message" was more high concept, delving into the metaphysical, and was thus less directly relatable.

The Youtuber "Folding Ideas" did a trilogy (?) of videos about 50 Shades of Grey films, that are well worth a watch. The videos are really funny and thought provoking but fair warning... you'll probably end up with a certain song stuck in your head for a while after.

The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)

Too big of a budget seemed to have gotten in the way of making a decent sequel. While the action sequences are entertaining the film suffers from pacing issues and doesn't hold your interest. You could probably argue that too time is spent in an attempt to make Vin Diesel look cool, at a cost of making the rest of the film quite boring overall.

4/10

Watched Twisters last night, great fun classic style disaster film. Surprised it worked really, would have expected it to be a load of old balls. But we enjoyed it for what it was.

Probably. 7/10 nothing incredible but a fun watch with a couple of nods to the original
